I believe that they may have also been a '70 GS option. A '70 GS & GS455 wholesale order form lists a V7 option as "Super Sport Wheels" with a UPC code of PA6. I have always wondered what they were. Phil
1970 Super Sport wheels were the same as the chrome 14" wheels, except they weren't chrome, they had painted rims and used trim rings. Not the same as the '71-'72 Super Sports. These 14" trim rings were the same for all three years.
They've become very scarce, since I think most people either switch them out for the better looking chrome wheels, or step up to the 15" chrome wheels. Seems like the painted 14's wouldn't clear the disc brake calipers, so the cars with disc got the chrome 14's. Somebody would have to clarify that. To get back on topic, in any case the '71-'72 Super Sports for sale here would clear the disc brakes.
Thanks all for the info provided. Surely, someone must need a set of these for their restoration... right?
They clear Disc brakes just fine. Had a set on a 71 GS I used to own that had Disc brakes. I had the centers cut out and welded into Chrome 15" shells for a different look.
My GS came with them from the factory, disc brake car. As a matter of fact, they were painted black right from the start. Seen some on a french-owned GS, just the same, black as well. I`ve attached a (nearly) day-one- pic. They don`t look shabby at all, I have to say. Jens
