Hi, I have a question on What is the correct Syle OEM brake Booster for 4 wheel power drum brakes on a 1971 Buick Skylark custom. I have seen different finishes I have seen the gold style and the silver plated syle which is correct? Please advise THanks Bill
THanks the reason I was asking is because year one has them and they look silver in color with the original stamp on them. THanks
maybe duane would know, but were all the a-body cars from 69-72 equipped with anodized (gold) boosters? i too have seen silver & black boosters on chevelles. perhaps, they were painted by the owner. i also believe the correct "delco" stamping on the original boosters was upside down. i have an original booster and it is stamped that way. my replacement is stamped rightside up.
All the a-body cars from 69-72 were equipped with anodized (gold) boosters. The plating is not meant to last forever and over time will go away. Also, especially in colder climates, the goldish color often fades until it has more of a silverish color. (You can see the original color under the bolts, where the air could not get to.) If it's painted, then it's wrong, regardless of the color. The originals did have the "Delco Morrane" stamped into them, upside down, but I have seen some originals where the stamping was so slight it could hardly be seen. So that's the skinny. Duane
Thanks that is a real big help mine has been painted and would like to get an original. THanks again Bill
I just ordered one with OPG it is the gold one stamped and licensed by GM. Not sure why year one had the silver ones but I went with the gold. Thanks Bill
Call "Booster Dewey" @ Power Brake Booster Exchange in Portland Oregon. He is the booster expert and has forgotten more than most will ever know! And...he is a great guy too. His number is 503-238-8882 Eric / :3gears:
Great thanks. I may need this because OPG is out of stock on this item. Do you know how much a booster costs to be plated?
If you have an original you want to have redone, you could ask Jim Weise. I believe he does these whenever he gets enough to do a batch. He takes them apart, has the correct plating done, and rebuilds the innards. He did mine and it came out looking great. You could always slap an autozone cheap job on it until Jim is finished.
Duane, do you happen to know what was on the 68's? Mine is pretty disgusting at this point, though functional, and I don't know if original. Thinking about replacing next summer.
$165 is kind of costly considering you could get a new one for a little over $200 from OPG if you wait for them to come in. I guess I will wait and see what the best way to go is. THanks
OK but the reproductions are not correct looking and stand right out to me. The triangles are cut to sharp. The truley outstanding cars go the extra distance and have the correct looking parts. It is rare that a repro part is even close to the original GM part. I always notice these at car shows. Soon everyone will think they are correct because everyone has them. If I judged a show I would deduct for that. Just my thoughts if anyone cares.
One thought to consider in making your decision, if you're original is pitted it'll never look good no matter what you do to it. If you have a good core that's original and want to watch out for Dave at shows  , then use your original.
Beware I have been spotted at shows coast to coast picking apart brake boosters. The good thing about the site I posted they sell used replated units outright for $250 I think.
