Larry, I had 70 GS 455 same color combination as your car was a 66,000 mile original car, but it was a rust bucket out of upstate New York the motor was seized up when I got it. Was a factory AC car with heavy duty: cooling built in plant G which I believe was Massachusetts. I ended up parting it out, in fact Jason put the gauge cluster in the bamboo cream beater that he sold. Here’s a picture of the original factory stage 1 fuel pump that was on the motor. see pictures.
That thing is crusty. And it's always interesting to learn different aspects that I don't know about. I'd still call it a Stage 1 pump, but its interesting to know that it was apparently a thing on other cars too!
Oh, I have no doubt that they came on other engines, I just don't get the connection between HD cooling and higher capacity fuel pump. That pump being part of the Stage1 package makes more sense to me, that's all.
I have the original punch card for my'73. It has the HD Cooling , A/C , performance axle ratio and positive traction option, but no trailer tow package. It still has the original fuel pump with the red factory paint just like the crusty one posted above.
I'm not saying it didn't happen, just not sure it was tied to the HD cooling option. You mentioned performance axle. That could also be a reason for the better pump?
Who knows they may have run out of non-stage 1 fuel pumps during production of the engines so they just used the stage 1 pumps anything was possible back in the day. The car that I had was built in plant G Massachusetts and it was built the fourth week of March 1970.
The car that I talked about had a 293 posi rear which is not a lot. May have been tied into the Posi rear option.
Just to add to the discussion, here's a copy of the window sticker for the '70 GS455 Convertible I mentioned previously. Notice the posi (2.93), HD Cooling, Heavy Duty Air Cleaner, Trailer hitch, trailer wiring, and Rallye Ride Control package. Notice also, that he ordered it without any power brakes. Or, maybe he forgot. Strange.
My presence has been requested! It’s good to know some of us olds guys can still be useful. Anyway regarding the high volume “Stage 1” pump, they were definitely part of the Stage 1 package and may have been tied in with other option packages as well. The way to figure this out might be from looking at the Factory Towing literature they had at the dealerships. That might have a list of what came with the “package”. Also, if you look at the Assembly manuals in Section 0 or 1, they list the UPC codes for the various packages, and often list all the UPC codes that were part of that package. You then have to look up what each code means, but it will let you know what was in the package. Right now I have zero time to look anything up, but with the above info I am sure someone else can do it. Also, check everything by model year, as things might have changed. It certainly does make sense to put the high volume pump on the towing packages. Duane
Question: did the specific Stage 1 fuel pump operate at any higher output pressure? I bought an AC Stage 1 fuel pump from Richard L. @ GSCA some 5 or 6 years ago and just put it on the shelf. He said (at the time) it was the last one of a small batch located in Canada. I believe he also said it was also a couple PSI higher than the regular pump. Does that sound correct?
This is what I bought about 15 years ago that is sitting on a shelf. I had a 71 GS455 at the time. Is this something special now?
