I've been meaning to start a list of known dates, but assuming this one is a legit date (054), I would think it would be correct. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Buick-...8a1324&pid=100012&rk=1&rkt=12&sd=201807220486
I have one for sale dated 0150. January 15, 1970. 04B would be 2nd week of April? Do you know your engine build date? My understanding of judging would allow for 4-6 months prior date for carb without deduction. This is what I have been told, haven't read it officially so someone may correct me.
From what I've read on here and in other places, there was typically a 4 month window - as Mark has stated above. I've also heard from pretty reliable sources that there were times when the assembly line workers just actually grabbed whatever part was close by and it became part of the car they were assembling. There are a lot of people with original, untouched cars that have oddly date coded parts on them. I guess it depended on whether it was a Monday or a Friday. As an aside - Dano - the carb Mark mentioned is right in the black car's "wheelhouse". :Brow:
If you do a search, this info is on this site. 0540 is a legit date, and is fine for an April 1970 built car. Below are dates for '70 Stage 1 carbs that I have been able to personally verify. A search here might turn up other dates. 1929 - 11 July 1969 2189 - 06 Aug. 1969 2399 - 27 Aug. 1969 2639 - 20 Sep. 1969 2939 - 20 Oct. 1969 3059 - 01 Nov. 1969 3239 - 19 Nov. 1969 0150 - 15 Jan. 1970 0540 - 23 Feb. 1970 0720 - 13 Mar. 1970 0900 - 31 Mar. 1970
Good info cousin Jimmy. I thought was the only one in Central Ohio up this early on a Sunday morning!......Clif
Mornin' cuz. I was up at 3:30 this morning. I don't know why I can only sleep 5 hours at a stretch....might be my guilty conscience. p
It would be too late for that car. It presumably needs a "3239" which one of our mutual friends just bought for a particular low-mi Stage 1 that was built the same day as the black car.
Thanks Jim! I had a few of the early dates & was going to search it on here sooner or later and will add this to my list of known distributor dates. I figured someone had done this but sometimes on these issues people are (understandably) hesitant to publish the list. The good side of this site is we've been able to pool all of our collective information as you well remember when it was all word of mouth &/or what we could glean from the GSX-tra every 3 months, but the bad side it it's made it easy for someone to build a fake car/parts. Of course the Vette guys have been dealing with this prolem for decades.
I read that thread wuth interest - Wasn't that a prototype (there's a certain name for it that I can't recall)? I wonder how many of those were made & if they ever made it onto any early production cars? I would think it'd be a very low quantity and that they probably had a special department just for making test carbs. & weren't even made on the production line. I'm suprised they weren't all destroyed.
"Mornin' cuz. I was up at 3:30 this morning. I don't know why I can only sleep 5 hours at a stretch....might be my guilty conscience. p" Same here, 4-5 hours is about all the sleep I get these days, or need. So many fun things to do and so little time! Getting old too, so I have good days and bad days, but can't tell one from the other!....LOL.....Cliff
So date codes make the thing more valuable ? It's all comin Rochester stuff. Needles. Jets, a spring under the power piston , I don't see the fuss. These aren't rare one of a kind carb castings
Some date codes are more rare than others, but the part number and all correct pieces make the value. If you have an all original drivetrain stage 1 4 speed, and the only incorrect part is the carb, then it is valuable. It's the only thing missing from my car.
Someone looking for the "missing piece" to their otherwise numbers matching car would beg to differ. If my car was a numbers car and the only thing missing was the correct date coded Q-Jet, you can be sure I'd be on the hunt.
Thread revival time. Did the 7040246 come with only the letters LK stamped on the pad after the part number? Seems a fella on Facebook found the one pictured and both the two letter code and date is something that's never been discussed. If it checks out, we'll update this thread.
