I'm working on my wiring plan and discovered my Spal fans pull 60 amps on start up (for about 1/2 a second) but run 15 amps continuous. I want to use a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker to protect everything but wonder if I will have issues tripping the breaker due to the start up current flow. What say you?
It should be ok. Breakers work on heating, so a quick inrush of current would probably not be of sufficient duration to allow significant heating and cause it to trip
You can use a pair of Aharon Time Delay Relay 10 Seconds 5 pin 12V 30A. Then the fans will not spike 60 AMPs at the same time you are engaging starter. Especially when the car is hot. I have dual Spal S2130 fans on both my Skylarks.
I know this is slightly off topic, but, fans are 30% more efficient pulling than pushing. I not sure why you need electric fans, but it's better to mount them behind the radiator if you have the choice.
Thanks guys - I like the time delay relay! Also, another reason to do a puller is because when the fan is behind the radiator you can use a shroud more effectively.
