Had a cam lobe failure, new parts on the way. Just wondering what lubricants you guys use for assembly and break in.
I use Lucas Assembly lube as well as CRC Heave duty assembly lube on cams. Lucas or any other ZDDP break in oil additive. I also spray the springs and rockers down with Lucas red and tacky, it's kinda foams and sticks.
I use Joe Gibbs break in oil. (non-detergent is very important as well as sufficient ZDDP) Keep RPM up and varied as you need splash on everything that does not have direct oil passage delivery but relies on splash for lube. (2000-3000-ish) Keep an eye on temps, and you can shut down, as long as you can start up within 3-4 seconds of cranking and back up to RPM to continue the break in. Oil pressure should be up to 60-80 PSI within 1-3 seconds of starting (some gauges are "lazy" and do not come up instantly) Oil pressure should not drop more than about 5-10 PSI by the time the 30 minutes have passed, but with the engine hot, it will drop quite a bit when you come to idle after 20 minutes. Fans directing air into the grill and doing the break in when it is coolest part of the day if you can. Your rings are likely seated, so it may not get hot.
Oil extreme is my go to additive . Not cheap, but with this stuff you can run steel wrist pins right on the rod with no bushing. I could not believe it until I saw it first hand during a motor disassembly! lubing up a cam and lifters is cake for this product.
On my current motor, I broke my cam and lifters in using old stock valve springs for the break-in and about the first very easy 100 miles. So far, so good. Time will tell if it lasts. Also, used a bottle of Comp Cams break-in oil with Brad Penn 10w30.
yes, trunk monkey, i have my son drive the dragster. i build the engine that goes 7500 with a 6-71 on it. the only issue with the 350's are dist/cam gear wear. trying to cure that issue. 15 yrs and only 1 head gasket blown. no oil filter, 4 qts of amsoil 10-30. now after your remark i expect you and other non believers to go to nascar engine shops and tell them , politely, they do not know what they are doing. matter of fact, it could be a lifetime position telling it to the world also.

I am absolutely using the "driven" to break it in . The short block and timing cover/oil pump was built by the machine shop. McBetts. I am installing the upper half. Heads etc. Just thinking about the pushrods, rockers and stuff.
I took the inner springs out and used the Driven break in oil and I use Schneider's cam assembly lube. I did not put any additives in the Joe Gibbs break in oil and used 10-40 for that one. Used that extreme lube on the pushrod tips and on the rollers on the rockers.
Thx. I also used the Schneiders cam lube (came with the cam - I gave to machine shop). I was planning to use the same Gibbs break in oil as you. I'm still waiting on a new FlowKooler water pump and waiting on new rocker shaft bolts and rocker shaft end shims from TA. Then I believe that I will lube up the upper half with the Lucas extreme pressure assy. lube that JW recommended . I also decided to let the machine shop break in and then install the inner springs and then dyno. There's at least 3 engines waiting ahead of me so hopefully sometime in February.
Tried the link for speedway - Lucas extreme pressure synthetic grease - "no longer available" - couldn't find anywhere else. Just looking to lube pushrods and roller rockers. I'm thinking that the Driven engine assembly grease should be fine from what I've heard and read up on.
