I bought the AutoFab manual R&P for my 64 project. Haven't installed it yet, so I can't comment on how it works, but the quality of fit & finish seems to be good. Uses a Flaming River R&P. They said it was usable on the street, so I'm counting on that, although a huge pothole may do some damage, as it is pretty much a "race part". I'm sure it'll match the "streetability" of the rest of my project.
As mentioned in another thread, I have the TRZ kit, its a great piece, my car is a race car, and ended up buying their steering column too. I had to re-fabricate the crossmember anyways due to damage from wheelies. Just start cutting a welding it all back together!! I know there are "bolt in" kits, i didn't want that on my car, plus I have several TRZ components already... I did loose some of the turning radius, could be bad for a street car, no tight turns in my car ever again!! Going straight it's been great... Gary G.
I'm not sure how to "link" the thread, but here's the title; My '65 lark drag car bent crossmember fix/Rack & Pinion conversion Gary G.
It's like a puzzle, trying to make the u-joints to work smoothly, and make sure you either weld, or Red locktite the set scews.. If i remeber mine, I locktited, and safety wired the bolts in.... Used 3 for my install, exhaust, and crossmember, are the areas that will affect the steering column path, that ends up at the rack...
Mine is in the car, but if you're following my build you know it's far from being road worthy. I had issues with the steering arms that bolt to the spindles. They didn't fit at all because I used "drop spindles", so I had to make my own. I'm not crazy about some of the elements of the kit, but overall I think it'll work OK. Time will tell "IF" I ever get it finished and on the road! LOL When I get back to my house PC, I can post some pictures of the install if you would like..........
So, my understanding is that I can use the AutoFab rack with my TRZ upper and lower control arms, but the brackets the tie rods hook to may need a set similar to Steve's he made? I have it in my feeble mind I want the rack and pinion setup. I am also going to retrofit the center of the front crossmember from Rick Martinez's car onto my car and realize I will have to make a pathway through it for the steering linkage.
Pat, I still have those steering arms that I made for the drop spindles if you're interested in them. Are you coming to the Nat's? Steve
