I have a brand new front lighting harness for my 67 skylark. I was going to add a pair of relays to help reduce current flow thru the headlight switch. However, I have purchased LED head lights, which don't need nearly the current incandescent lights do. So since I'm running LED, do I really need to cut open this perfect new wire harness and hook in relays?
No - the LEDs draw less power then the OEM. I run mine in the 67 with the original 56 year old harness! Unless you bought the ones with the cooling fan
It looks like the ones I bought have a little built in fan. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P3293SK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This was what I bought.
I believe I used these without a relay. States they are only 30watt. Auxbeam H1 Led Bulb Fanless, Z6 Series H1 LED Bulbs with EMC Anti-Interference, 300% Brightness 6500K Cool White, Replace for Halogen Bulb (Pack of 2) https://a.co/d/2Mfq6OV
Its just me but I would go with fanless. I used Auxbeam but a different model. I would double check the clearance behind the headlight bucket to see if there is room.
These lamps you guys are linking to don't seem to cross with our old original low beams? Am I missing something or are you also using a housing to accommodate them?
Correct @Max Damage you buy something like a hella glass housing that was originally for Halogen and swap these in. I used a set of fanless Auxbeams but the ones @Houndogforever should be fine too. I did NOT install a relay, as the power draw was actually less than the old T3s.
LARRY70GS and I used this housing. GS Power OEM style 5-inch Round Glass Lens Housing H4 HID for Cars, Truck and Van, LED Halogen High Low Beam Headlight Lamp Conversion Vehicle Light Assembly (Chrome) https://a.co/d/6FPki0z I really like them.
Good info here: https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/71-gs-350-headlight-upgrade-leds.366324/ Some of the lens housings you buy are slightly off center, like 2-5 degrees.. You can bend the tabs or modify the buckets. Some of them are also thinner than stock so you have to shim them in the retaining rings. Really simple and the lights are much better that the old lights. One other issue is cost. Some conversion sets are really expensive and other, more DIY, are not.
