There's a thread on here about '70 350 upper hoses - I was looking @ having them made but got sidetracked on the project however have been meaning to get back into it. I have a couple contacts @ Gates as well as a couple catalogs from the '70's. The tooling and MOQ (min. order qty.) wasn't all that bad - I was also going to see if DK &/or any other parts vendors would want to buy some. I believe there is one Gates # that works pretty well for everything. IIRC, '70 350 & 455 is different (& '69 are same #'s as '70 I believe), '71 is the same, and '72 are different. Dave (@copperheadgs1) seems to be our resident expert. Depending on how particular everyone is (I.e. how much extra is it worth to have one that's exactly correct shape for ea. application) it probably wouldn't be a big deal to make a couple different ones. Maybe the one that works for everything & one exact for '70 455? Might need to digitize an original. I don't think the Gates catalogs matched up exactly with the assy. manuals/parts books, but my memory isn't what it used to be. It may also be that some are different only by the ends being a different length in which case they could be trimmed. My next step when I got sidetracked was going to see if they by chance still had original drawings. I'm pretty slammed & not really in car mode right now but I'll see if I can get back into this project - No promises on a timeframe. I hate to open a floodgate, but I guess it'd help to know how many would be interested & for what application. Let's start with uppers for now as that seems to be the bigger issue.
Dano, I may be interested in contacting Gates with my upper 455 if you didn’t want to do it. I guess it would depend on price. I bet I could sell several hundred. They did make the correct upper so they probably have the specs. Frank even has their part number. Interestingly 71 GS 350 used the same upper GS455 hose where 70 did not.
Here is correct GM hose with just GM part number on it top. Bottom is also exact correct shaped hose made by Goodyear. It has Goodyear logo and GM part number and two letter code in a different place. There are no Goodyear part numbers on it only some kind of date code. It is true NOS that would have sold through dealer.
Photos of the repro hose and the hose I took off my car. I don't remember when I bought the old hose. Is this what is meant by ribbed ? The repro is embossed in the rubber "Made in Mexico"
Those are Dayco. Not correct appearance for a GS455. They can be made to work but they don’t look good. Yours are not ribbed at all. It’s the Gates that have the bad ribs now.
I realize this thread was started in 2019 but thought I'd post my question here since it's related to the bottom radiator hose. I just bought the below shown lower hose for my '70 GS455. It's Dayco p/n 70742. It's different than the hose currently on the motor but looks like it may fit. The illustration in the Advance Discount online catalog shows the lower hose should look like the one on my car but when it came in it looked like this. Is it the one for '71 motors that clears the frame better?
I wouldn't loan it either. I "loaned" a 69 dash bezel to a well known person who will remain un-named for repro purposes on the understanding that I would get it back and never did after multiple phone calls and emails. So yeah, never again.
Is this upper hose the same as a 69 upper hose? Because as far as I know the upper for a 69 is available still.
Since this radiator hose issue covers several years/motors shouldn't this be made into some kind of common reference thread? It has been going on a long time and there seems to be a lot of interest in tracking for a long-term solution ... my two cents
