Any auto parts store will have a GM internal regulator alternator. The trade number is 7127. You'll probably have to ask for an alternator for a 74 GM car. If you ask for an alternator for a 68, your gonna get an external regulator alternator every time
Yeah ten four but the plug out on the back side is different I did see that they have a small retro fit harness available
I'm confused.....the defective alternator is an internal or external alternator? External- 7122 Internal- 7127 It's one or the other
Ok now you got me all confused.... You have a 68 it should have a Voltage Regulator under the hood somewhere... That kit is for a getting rid of the Voltage reg...
Pontiac is weird; they began using internally regulated alternators on some GPs in ‘68. Patrick https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=549925&page=2 GM 1100800…
I need the plug like this one but the alternator needs to be internal reg That's it Looks like I'm going to be doing the one wire set up
That is an external regulator alternator. Which means, if thats the original alternator, your car had an external voltage regulator on it. You can easily convert that to an internal by using that conversion adapter and jumper for the voltage regulator harness
This is an internally regulated delco alternator. The plug is on the side. You can't get an internally regulated alternator with a externally regulated plug on it.
For regular stuff, that's an externally regulated alternator, which is all I see in the parts houses as stock replacements. How did you test? The conversions to a 10 SI alternator (GM's internally regulated alternator for many years) or a 1-wire deal have different wiring. I can't recall if a 1-wire is a self-exciting conversion or not, or if it retains the function of the idiot light.
From what I just read in the above link I would either open that thing up or take it to a local starter/ alt/gen shop.
It seems there is a little confusion here. I'll try to clear it up a little. The first pic is what I think you have. It looks like an internal alt, but is an externally regulated alt using the plug you said you need. The pic with 2 alts shows an external with the paperclip and the one to the right of it is an internal. The external alts are interchangeable to be used with a seperate reg. The one that looks like an internal was only used for a year or two.
Did a simple test first disconnect cables car died Remove tested at auto parts store It failed Got a new one and it's external reg So bye bye original style as a core I will order a one wire now Oh well Lesson learned I guess Maybe I'll go ahead and install my Holley EFI to it now
Question. Why not change the 2wire plug on your car and go to a newer GM alt. Im asking this as a question to all. I Would much rather have a 12si than a one wire. https://alternatorparts.com/how-to-identify-your-gm-alternator.html
Good question, Bob. Maybe Stellar can answer that. Personally, I like the CS130 upgrade myself. Stellar, that's some stellar intel.
