Just picked up a 470 stroker from a great fellow in Washington state. He decided to sell his project car, the 470 he had built up. The short block is one of the earlier versions- Diamond pistons and BBC i beam rods. The short block was built in around 2010 and has never had a set of heads on it. The machine work and block oil mods were done by Cope Brothers Racing in the Seattle area. It has a TA 413 cam ground on a 116 LSA, said to have an nos gm timing cover. I have a set of cnc’d stage 2 heads that will be completed very soon, so timing is good. Not sure im keeping this cam.....there are some other options on flat tappet cams at TA right now. The owner of this project bundled up all sorts of extra parts - B4B, Holley 850, rocker arms, stud kit, adjustable push rods etc etc etc. I will disassemble to clean and check clearances and adjust if needed just to be diligent as it has been sitting for 12 years.
Nice score! While you have it down I would grind off all of casting seam lines on top of those main webs, no need to give a crack a real good place to start down there! 116, sounds like a Cam for use with boost, not NA.
Yes I’m likely changing the cam to one of the current TA offerings. TA has a number of flat tappet cams available.
The mains are said to be as tight as 0.0017, rods are said to be 0.0017 - 0.0022 I think it would be prudent to open up and measure all, check these tolerances. They are a little tight from what im being told. I have time. Its a winter engine swap project

Once its torn down, and clearances are determined, we’ll go from there. Its going to see some track time, but mostly street use. No roller cams in site, so thinking about the 290-08HL
Ordered the 290-08HL cam, roll master timing set and 2 inch stage 2 headers. Block and crank heading to machine shop to increase clearance on the mains. They were too tight. Everything else checked out. These projects sure take a long time. My heads have been in the works for 8 months.
You would have to go .010 under further than what crank already is. As you can’t polish any real measurable clearances. I would stay clear of anyone trying to tell you to loosen the line hone . Set clearances at .027-.003 with good oil mods and proper set up oil pump you would have plenty of oil pressure to keep motor happy and last a long time. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of opinions though
Clearances are between .0017 and as tight as .0015 Will be shooting for .0025 The clearance will likely be created with a light line hone. Anyone using this cam ? TA 290-08HL
I saw that but he stated that they were said to be .0017. I just wondered if he actually measured them.
Ive been running this cam ( although I believe its the 290-08H) in my 470 for @ 16 years. Pretty good street manners. Bob Makley from Finishline performance ported the iron heads and opened up the valves to Stage 1 size. It made 520hp/550tq, still able to run power brakes. Lots of fun behind a 4 speed!
It’s pretty reasonable to get it where I’d like it, then the block can be thoroughly washed, reassembled. It’s been sitting around for 12 years ….. it needed the disassembly and cleaning. These deals always seem to come with more work than anticipated.
Thanks everyone for tips and advice. As the short block needed cleaning, found a couple minor scratches on crank journals, crank is being polished, line honed to open up to 0.0025 clearances on the mains. Can’t wait any longer for a roller, so the 290-08 HL is the flat tappet cam, Scott Brown has cnc ported my stage 2 heads, will be onto valve work etc. As it’s a winter project, will allow time to plan out new tranni lines, oil balance line, fuel delivery. In the spring it goes on the chassis dyno for break in and tuning.
