Cause it's fathers day I decided to work on my 425 shortblock a little bit, and check the main bearing clearances. Turns out, somebudy swapped the main thrust bearing in my 60 year old NOS kit from a 1' width to a 1.5" width. So now I'm looking for a single thrust bearing set for a 401/425 motor. Anybody have oddball orphans sitting on the shelf? The correct Federal Mogul number is 2104 CPA apparently, but other brands will certainly work.. Thanks, RT
Happy Father’s Day to you that stinks about the thrust bearing. That’s the first time I saw a picture of the bottom end of a nail head those blocks were pretty beefy in the right location.
Hey thanks! I've had worse set backs, so this'll sort itself out...and yeah the Nail is a tough ( but heavy ) block! hey I should mention these are nominal size, not .010 or anything..
yeah all of that, very rugged motor. So now I know I'm a hoarder, because in my parts stash I found another set of takeout bearings I used on a break-in motor and robbed the thrust bearing out of that set. When you start asking people for stuff you've already got, time to take inventory!!
I see Russ replied elsewhere that the wide thrust bearing was used on the 264-322-364 which had the thrust bearing on the rear journal, not the center journal like the 401-425. There was another difference in the 401-425 thrust bearing. The later ones had a taller thrust area (larger OD). There might be a difference in how the block is machined, the taller late bearings may not fit the earlier blocks. I'm thinking the change was 1963 or 64. I'll ask Russ.
Thanks for the info Walt, I was lucky that this one cleaned up well and fit fine, although snug, width wise. I didnt love the scratches and dings, but a bit of crocus cloth got em back in shape. And yes, Russ and I talked about it and I was surprised that there was that much differnece between a 364 and 401 block (and I assume, crank) Thats said, I have a NOS 364 thrust bearing P/N# 2103 CP up for grabs, just pay shipping!!
