Are these 1962 Buick. 9 3/8 rear ends worth much? Complete rear ends, non posi open carriers with unknown ratios. Finned brake drums. But I can check ratios.
Thanks Larry, I had scanned that over quickly earlier. These have the the old "drop out" carriers like the old 9 inch units. Not the same as the newer ones?
Don't really know that much about the 9 3/8" rears, so I linked you over to that thread. Try sending a PM to Tom Telesco (telriv) He may be able to help.
Ok hopefully he will see it or someone else will know. Would hate to see these go to iron if they are worth something. Would probably save the center sections and drums.

As mentioned '56-'62. All have 31 spline axles. Can be swapped to '56-'60 torque tubes to convert to open drive. Save drop-out, axles & drums. Usually rest can go unless someone wants to swap whole rear. Then save ALL control arms, springs & ALL mounting brackets to frame & ALL e-brake cabling if someone wants to do a '56-'60 properly. If came out of LeSabre more than likely a 3.23. Otherwise 3.07 or 2.93. If it was posi worth BIG$$$$$, but unfortunately not. I've have one from a '61 LeSabre for yrs. NO ONE WANTS TO PAY. Guess they don't need it bad enough. Unfortunately when they do something ELSE they end up paying more $$$$ & don't get something designed for their set-up with the results of poor handling & braking. Some just need to learn the HARD WAY!!!
These sure are not growing on trees. Just finding a car these days is very tough in ANY YARD... Anyone with a car these can be used on should try to make a deal... THERE ARE NO AFTER market parts for any of these BuicK rears all the way up to 1965... even the carrier bearings are obsolete. GRAB what you can and oil it up shrink wrap it in plastic and shelf it...If you drive your car sooner or later your going to need that part. Jim J D
What can you do... You have a life. You can not save everyone. They will be CRYing later... Not your fault, you tried. Jim
That is what I heard too... 63 64 65 30 spline and the 57-62 were 33 spline 1966-1970 30 spline. Jim J D Race
I have full experience with 63-65 and 66-70 for sure. Physically seen and counted. The early stuff before 63 is all books for me and no first hand physical experience in the BUICK rear. Pontiac Olds I can go all the way back to the 53 54 55 56 era.
I have a rear end from a 63 4dr Special (stamped A255)and today picked up one from a 62 2dr Skylark (stamped XC008). I'm curious to find out what I have once I did deeper.
IF it is the standard rear gear more than likely will be a 3.23 ratio. As far as posi goes the easiest way is to jack up the car with both wheels off the ground & the car in park. IF you try & turn the wheel on one side the other will turn in the opposite direction. IF it doesn't move or is HARD to move it may be a posi that is worn out. Another way to tell is by the fill plug. IF it has a tag hanging from it & takes a 3/4" open end wrench to remove the plus more than likely it's a posi. IF the fill plug has a 3/8ths. inch square that you would use a 3/8ths. drive extension to remove it's likely NOT a posi. Tom T.
The 61-62 diff's have 33 splines and the 63-65 have the 31 splines. You CAN take a 63-65 drop out and install it in the 61-62 housing, but you must use the 31 splined axles from the 63-65. I had a 62 Hearse and I used a 64 positraction and the 64 axles and they all fit! So, if you use ANY carrier for the 61-65, you must use the same splined axles and it's a match!
