I watched the Gumball Rally movie the other day for the 400th time. If you haven't seen it, it's on YouTube for free. Highly recommended. Filmed in 1976.

I always like the yellow 70 Camaro that Gary Busey drove. So since the cold weather is up on us and it's getting dark early, I thought Id make a replica of the yellow Camaro. Here it is up on 2 wheels before it met it's demise!

AMT finally released a full bumper 70 Camaro Z28 model that I'm going to use for the basis of this project

The Camaro had a 67 Corvette Stinger scoop on it.

So I found a resin hood that will donate its scoop for the project

Unfortunately, the 70 Camaro model has the early style "short" rear spoiler. Plus I need a set of Cragars with some big tires for the rear. I'm going to steal the parts I need out of the Baldwin Motion Camaro model. I even found a guy on eBay making 1/24th scale Cibie driving lights complete with the Cibie decals!

Should be a fun little project. Stay tuned!

Franco was the best in that movie .

The squirt gun scene in the garage was hysterical!

That was a real 427 cobra in the movie. And they crunched it. You can see in the LA river scenes that the nose got damaged. That car today is well over a million dollar. I bet that cobra was probably 25-30k in 1976

What's even more amusing is Franco's co driver calls it an "antique" even though the car is only 10 years old at the time

A kid in HS had a ratty brown / primer 4 Speed, Split Bumper 70 Z-28 , Car was 10 years old at the time and beat to hell but he would leave the parking lot every day with an exceptionally impressive burnout. I always loved the look of those split bumper cars and remember this movie as well.

If you take a closer look, it's actually a full bumper nose with just the bumper removed. I usually hate that look as the grill just looks too big without the body colored RS grill surround. This is the rare occasion that it works well. Especially with the fog lights mounted where they are.

In thinking about this, it's a pro touring car. Even before the term was even invented

The full bumper nose also lacks the round turn signals between the grill and the headlights.

    Funny you should ask...

I always seem to tackle the hardest portion of s job first. The hardest part was making the custom hood. I harvested the Corvette Stinger hood scoop from the resin 69 Camaro hood and cut the hole in the 70 hood. Easier said than done! Lots of fitting, cutting and sanding. It's almost ready for some sandable lacquer primer

Im trying to finish up the Corvette though..

Just got my new wheels and tires for the Camaro. Aoshima makes a set of big and littles I thought would fit perfectly and be pretty close to the movie car.

They're deep dish Cragar S/S wheels and Firestone wide ovals. I had to cut the backside off the wheels so I could use the kit supplied rear wheel section that looks like a backing plate. They look pretty cool and I think it'll have it a good stance

Body is almost ready for paint. I still need to pick up some 68-69 Butternut yellow in a spray can. Between the primer, paint and clear, I can see myself spending $100 on paint!

Chassis was painted in Eastwood under hood black. Center section of rear was painted in VHT cast iron paint. Exhaust was aluminum paint mixed with a little flat black

The Chevy orange was a custom mix of red and yellow. Notice the AC oil filter!

The new wheels / tires and chasis colors look grreat. What year did oil filters go from white to blue?
