Need to remove the fuel pump from 69 Riviera gas tank with the right tool (wrench)

    Hi Buick folks,

I guess this question is aimed towards the 69 and 70 Riviera owners like Yardley and Dale.

My fuel pump is apparently out of service in my 69 Riviera. The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. I have removed the little panel in the trunk that allows access to the fuel line, the sending unit wire, ground wire, and fuel pump wire.

Please note that I can easily blow through the fuel line when it is removed from the gas tank so it is certainly not a plugged fuel line. Also pouring a wee bit of gas into the Q-jet allows the 430 to fire right up, so therefore no carb problems or ignition problems.

I then cranked on the engine with the fuel line off while my wife observed the metal line from the fuel pump in the gas tank. No gas is being pumped.

I am confident I have bad fuel pump or perhaps it is plugged somehow. In any case it must be removed and replaced or rebuilt.

According to my 69 Buick service manual on DVD, one removes the unit and cam ring with wrench "J-21518". Can I use another tool in a pinch or where can I find this specialty wrench? I guess I will have to use some penetrating oil as well since this part has not been touched ever and 44 years is a good while.

    TIA.

The fuel pumps on those years were located on the timing cover and ran off the cam. They didn;'t have intank pumps. The tank guage and pickup were located inside the tank and were accessed from that ring. Perhaps yours has been modified.

Yes, there is a special tool. I have it in my tool box and it works very well. But....you can use a BRASS punch and a hammer to remove the ring. Just tap the ring, alternating sides to keep it "centered" and it will come off pretty easily.

Just another word of caution. Do not attempt to remove the wires at the sender. That connector doesnt come off!! There is an electrical plug maybe 10-12" away. Follow the wiring and you'll find it.

The 69 and 70 Rivs had in tank pumps. I know, who woulda thunk it? Buick even made an access hole in the trunk to service it so you didnt have to drop the tank. 66-70 Rivs are strange cars. batteries are on the wrong side, fuel lines on the wring side, in tank electric pumps, etc.. I love how the service manual says on every diagram- "all except 9000 series"

Before you go to the trouble of buying a pump, there is an inline fuse that is located along the cowl, above the brake booster. Check that first.
    Edit:
My '70 service manual says it is a dark blue wire.

Well, I checked my 70 Riv parts car, and there is no mechanical pump. So, I learned something today.

    Code:

Dale, I checked that as well. Sure is a tiny fuse! Dark blue wire as well.

Jason, I will get the tool. I guess I will go ahead and have the fuel tank sender rebuilt as well with a new sock. Maybe my gas gage will be a little more accurate then. With a full tank, the gas gage displays well above full while absolutely empty, the gas gage will read about two needle widths above empty.

I am aware of the wiring at the sender. It looks very flimsy. I used great care around it.

Thanks again everybody. Oh yeah, I am having fun fixing. :(

Yardley just walked out of my house ten minutes ago- before I saw this. I'm sure he'll chime in, but there is a reliable source to get your pump rebuilt.

I seem to recall Yardley used a pump for a Ford Ranger in his '69.
May be a good alternative if OEM pump is hard to source.

Ford ranger v6 pump works but is not a perfect fit. Use a brass drift to turn the locking ring.
