What is the purpose of this extra bracket? Is the standard cross member not enough stabilization for the transmission?

I have seen brackets similar to that hanging the exhaust.

This bracket was definitely attached to the transmission tail. I don't remember the orientation.

The bushing I took off had only one stud.

I replaced it with one that will use 2 bolts for use with the transmission mount I got.

That bracket I was asking about seems reduant to me. I'm not planning on doing anything similar unless I heard a compelling reason for it's existence.

If memory serves me correctly the bracket was used to support the catalytic convertor.

That actually makes sence and now im understanding the previous post that basically said the same thing.

I'm pretty sure the Lesabre I took the engine and transmission out of didn't have much exhaust system left.

The connection to the transmission was just a convenient mounting place, not the main purpose of the bracket.

Thanks, I will see if that and a little welding will replace
the current support that blocks a pipe on the drivers side.
