Hi, Looking to redo my exhaust system. Bought the shorty header and looking to install 2.5" system with long case muffler for my '71 455 GS. Question is, can is use the 3" down pipe and use a reducer to connect the 2.5 system? Not looking to go 3" all the way back. If so, what would the correct reducer size? Trying to make the install as easy ( more me ) as possible. Thanks.

No, read the description of the reducers. The down pipe end will have a 3" OUTSIDE diameter (O.D.), and will slip inside the reducer. The reducer is designed with a 3" INSIDE diameter (I.D.). The other end of the reducer has a 2 1/2" O.D. to mate with the rest of the 2 1/2" exhaust.

Read up on the TA site,

    http://taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_2008C

    TA has reducers as well,

The TA shorty headers come with reducers?

If you can manage, it's better to keep the large diameter pipe until the muffler, then you can downsize coming out of the muffler. With a good muffler like the Walker DynoMax, the exhaust will think it's hit open air when it enters the muffler, then as the pulses mix, cool somewhat, and pass through the muffler, a 2.5 inch pipe won't be a restriction. As Per David Vizard - I built the 2NABOT exhaust that way (shorty headers, 3" pipe to the mufflers, then 2.5 inch over the axle and under the bumper), and it's as zero-restriction as a full length exhause can be.

Thanks, Never thought about going that way. Plan on getting the piping form TA as there are no muffler shops here that can do mandrel bends.
Hoping to do all the work myself and avoid any welding if possible. I was looking at the Walker but feel the maybe a bit to quite for me. Looking to go
FlowMaster 50 series long case. I have the old 40 series that was done back in the late '80.
Wonder if TA would split them up like you say???

Yes Larry, I have read up on these items. My Post is about the Shorty 3" down pips....

TA has Collectors reducers... Your first post is what i was looking for.

I bought the shorty used, so the collectors where modified for the previous owners exhaust.
