My 67 should be getting paint soon. Very excited to get this car back to the original color. Really two questions. What is the level of gloss supposed to be? Also, what areas are correct to be black? I have seen the quarter panel extensions should be black on the inside where the taillights go, and I know the part where the trunk lid closes over it is black too. Where is the correct place to mask this off? My old GS is shown in the picture, but it was repainted, so I can’t trust this 100%. Plus the angles of the lines on it always looked a little off from one side to the other. Thanks for any advice or information.
The angle on the passenger side looks correct. As far as I remember there's a seam where the panels are welded together and that is the line to follow. The black paint also looks right in that photo, I believe it's satin black. SEM trim black would be perfect for that task. Here's how mine looks.....
Don't forget the trunk lid. The edges get the satin black also. Here is a pic of my original paint car.
Well, I just went and looked at my car and there aint no seam where I thought there was. It was just masked from the lower point of the upper part of the quarter extension like shown in your photo on the passenger side. If both sides are symmetrical you're good.
Thanks for the replies, going to pass along the info to the paint shop. I did not know about the trunk lid edges, does that wrap underneath at all? Or, is it just to the edge? Does the black on the quarter extensions do the same underneath the chrome trim?
Jarrod, The black paint appears to be a satin or semi gloss. Definitely not flat black and definitely not full gloss. I looked back through my photos and there is some variation on where the black paint stops on the trunk opening. As long as you don't do it perfectly where the 1/4 panel and tail panel are welded together, I don't think anyone can tell you that you are wrong. This is an original paint car: These original paint examples are a little higher: Maybe it depends on the paint color, maybe it depends on the date the car was built, maybe it depends on the assembly plant, but every GS400 did not get the blackout on the edge of the trunk lid. My Apple Red ‘67 GS400 has original paint and the edges of the trunk lid are red, not black. I've seen several original paint cars of various colors, even light colors, and they didn't have the black paint. But if my '67 GS was a lighter color I would definitely do it just to ensure that a tiny strip of light paint color isn't visible. The black paint on the 1/4 panel extensions are unfortunately overlooked by a lot of people when they paint a '67 and it sure looks ugly. This always makes me cringe! One last thing, the trunk trim is supposed to be solid black on a GS 400 with no chrome ribs showing. This is a NOS part here and some vintage photos of new '67s.
Here is an example of the black paint color. This is the well-known unrestored '67 GS400 that only has 9k miles. The car is black and Fisher Body still applied the blackout paint to the tail panel even though the car was black. You can see here the gloss black against the stain black.
What valuable information Gary, thanks for sharing all of that. I do think a lot depended on plant and date. To ask more questions? This applied after the car is painted right, sprayed over body color? Does it go just down to the rear pinch weld behind the bumper?
