Hi All, I'm hoping someone can provide some guidance on this. I'm rebuilding my distributor. I took it completely apart. Underneath the points plate, there's a felt disk with oil on it. Under that is a plastic support plate. Under that is a well with what looks like oiled shredded felt. I'm sure it's been there since 1962.

My questions are, what is it really, should I put it back in, or is there something else I can put in there in its place?

There's what looks like a small oil feed hole. I imagine this felt stuff is fo holding the oil that splashes up the shaft without allowing too much to get by.

    Anyone.

    Dan,

I rebuild, recurve, set timing points etc. all the time for people all over the world.. That is actually dried up grease. Remove & clean as nec. then pack with the gease of your choice. I like using the Kendall Super Blue grease. Once you start using it, it will be ALL the grease you'll always use.
You will ALSO see two grooves at the top of the shaft under the "advance" plate. those need to be greased ALSO. During yearly dist. maintenance this is where a drop of oil is applide to hopefully oil the mechanism by wicking down to keep from sticking.
Grease the shaft ALSO when assembling.

Wow, I never would have imagined that grease would have dried like that. It's so crumbly. Anyway, thank you so much for your quick response. I will carry on with my rebuild.
