I've heard of the "crown" being off or non existent on some of the later fenders. Is the crown on the top flat surface? Is it concave or convex? Late stamping fenders, is it towards the end of '72 production?
Yeah. The later fenders the top it too flat. The hood looks too high in the center. When you drill out the spot welds the fender often pops into place as soon as the last weld is cut. You can see in the picture it comes up almost a quarter inch. These fenders I had kicking around must have been later ones. However, I've seen this even on '70s. Usually they are not as bad though.
Question about Seamist Green (GM code 45). I have heard that it is one of those colors that is very difficult to duplicate in modern base coat/ clear coat. I have seen several repaints in bc/cc and from what I've seen I have to agree. My code 45 Malibu has about 60% original paint, and the original parts have a very silverish tone. The parts that were touched up long before I even got the car have a much more greener tone. The repainted cars I've seen ranged from DIY garage jobs to professionally restored, but the paint lacked that 'silver' tone that the original has. I have been told by several painters that the switch from the old time lacquer to the newer bc/cc is the culprit. Perhaps it can be tweaked by experimenting with different metalflake, but it's still hard to nail the original tone with todays paints. Anyone out there with more experience than me with this?
As gree ages the blue cone out leaving the green lighter,...the color is actually more less correct,..the original paint thsts left isn't what it was in 1970,...not even close
I hear what you're saying, but underside of the trunk is mint and it's a light silverish green. I guess we can't discount that paint might have varied from plant to plant back then either...
Can't think of a factory 70 color that would look bad on a convertible. At the risk of going slightly off topic, a friend had his all original gs455 coupe stolen in the late 80's. I always referred to it as a light blue or baby blue, I don't think it had metal flake. Would this have been Azure blue? It looked a lot like this color.
Yeah, a lot of older colors are hard to match. I find most of the time the metallic in the formula is too coarse. I've often swapped out what the formula calls for with a finer one and can get it a lot closer. Different paint manufactures differ as well. I'll be going with the Seamist Green. This formula looks pretty good as is. Plus its an overall and I'm not overly concerned about it being dead on.
With a dark green convertible top? and white interior OR if you could get a dark dark green interior. Buick mags with redline tires!
Johnno the Masshole (of video infamy) has an Azure Blue ‘70 GS455. I can’t find a pic of it, but it’s in the videos (usually in a cloud of tire smoke). Patrick
