What do honey bees do in the winter? Here in Michigan we go into winter with a double brood box (marked BB1 in above posted pictures.) the boxes will contain about 30 to 40000 bees all female. They live a bit longer in the winter because they are not flying out side beating them selves to death. They will form a cluster a ball if you will on the bottom box on some honey frames with the queen in the center of the mass. They eat honey and beat their wings to produce body heat and keep the center mass of bees in the 90F range heat wise no matter how cold it is out side. the mass of bees are always moving from the center of the mass to the out side and from the out side to the inside, always working together keeping the queen warm. When we get warm winter days above 45F we will take a quick peek to see how they are doing on food. We will add some sugar on the top bars if we feel they need it and add pollen patties mid March to g3t them off to a booming start for spring. 3 colonies at our christmas tree farm out yard. Makeing 3 new colonies in the spring from packages of bees from down south. I won these at a raffle. Normally I raise my own queens and pull frams from another colony for a start. Wife and I checking a frame to make sure that is indeed a queen we were looking at. Honey house is needed to get a licence to sell honey in Michigan at stores. Imagine being a fare paying passenger and the pilot pulls that take off. People would crap their pants. Was waiting for them to loop that thing!
I own and run a bread route. I just had the truck wrapped, everyday I load it at 3am and service 8 major markets and 7 smaller stops, usually finish around 11am. Most of the Stop & Shops have invested in these $50,000 robots that travel the isles of the store looking for spills and then send a signal to maintenance, but I'm sure they do more besides get in the way.
