Ok so here is the engine I bought off Craigslist for $500 ( I Paid Full Asking Price ) that I picked up last Saturday oct 5th 2019 I bought it from an older lady ( her husband bought it new in 1976, he passed away oct 1st 2018 ) in North Jersey the story was that he ordered The engine before he even had a car to put it in. A fall occurred on the truck while in route and dented the oil pan and valve cover and radiator was damaged it was complete carb to pan ( It was then taken apart to check for any other damage and was never put back together however he did buy all new GM gaskets to put it back together ) was ordered and shipped thru kenne bell also was listed as having stage 3 heads wasn't sure what I was going to come across after driving almost 2 hrs way. Did the lady happen to give you a flow sheet on the heads? KB farmed out their head porting to some guy and I was wondering what the flow numbers were for the Stage III KB heads.
Nice! What a deal. That sure was a high dollar operation to get it all done by KB! Shame they didn't keep some WD-40 on everything. Still a great deal. The heads flow very good and are worth that much. Should run 11's with no problem. Looks like they skimmed the deck a smidge. I'd check out how deep the pistons are in the hole before using the .020" steel shim head gaskets to make sure you have at least .040" clearance. With those pistons and gasket compression is going to be 12+ I'm sure. That seems to be a MKc118 cam which won't bleed off much pressure for use with pump gas so be prepared. The rust on the valve springs is a bit iffy but that cam is not a monster so they should hold up. Anything more serious and I'd change them.
The good thing is he did turn it over every couple years, used a flat edge and came up with .20 from piston to deck with a feeler gauge everything came up very well even the valve springs and took off all the loose rust on them. I can't find the ratio of the pistons but I'm thinking they are 10.25 to 1 the catalog just says UPTO 14 to 1
Im not sure to be honest the lady didn't know much and only thing on the paper work is. "machine work"
OK so the Pistons are .20 in the hole. My stage two engine was decked and the pistons with Valve reliefs is just about even in the hole compression is 13 1/2 to 1 I say you're close to 11 1/2 or more compression depending on what gasket you use and exactly what the use of the car would be for street or race.
Mostly street driven almost 7k miles last year may run it once in awhile want to run 92 pump gas is the plan. do you think that would be fine to use?
