The forecast here shows single digit highs and around 10 below during the night. So it's about normal. Maybe the vortex is staying to the west? We've had a few mornings touch 20 below..
Wonder how many blocks will freeze? Hardly anyone checks their antifreeze to see how low it's good for....as if it doesn't matter anymore. People used to get it checked every fall.....
...and then write that number on the core support or radiator cover with a paint stick or grease pencil.
-33 this morning on the drive to work. Garage at my house is insulated but not heated. There was liquid water on the floor still (probably brine from road salt, not pure water) so it couldn't have been too cold in the garage. Truck block heater was plugged in and I have remote start so I fired the truck up from inside the house while pouring a cup of coffee for the road. Everything was A-OK on the drive in, traffic was light because people are staying home. I walked about 100 yards from my truck to the office without a hat. A bit chilly but not bad. This whole winter thing is a non-event as long as you are prepared. It's kind of like living in Arizona in August but the opposite - You just go from air conditioned place to air condition place, don't linger outside. Same for the cold. The weather will kill you if you aren't ready for it.
We usually get about 2 or three of those type of cold spells during a winter. The worst one was in 1969, it went down to -40 and I think it lasted a couple months. I remember a bad December -February in 1977 when it never went above zero F for the whole 3 months.
Maybe a "little" relief in site?? ws https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd
Ya, your right Stacey.. It's winter, get used to it, it gets cold.. -32 in the sun, with no wind, seems downright tolerable this morning. It was much nicer yesterday afternoon with our high of -15 very little wind, and the sun out, than it was on Tuesday, when it was -5 cloudy and the wind was howling. That day was nasty. I showed up at for league night at the bowling Alley in Andover last night.. about a hour trip from the house here.. Bucy, who lives 2 minutes away from the place was looking at me in disbelief.. " I would have bet money you would have stayed home tonight" I said "Why, because it's cold?.... whatever.." 68 degree temp swing coming for the weekend.. I'm going to the beach! JW
Just in from another date with the snowblower. The plows had gone through so it was pretty deep out by the road. Up to my waist on the walkway to the shop. I just did the two lane to the house, the walks and 20' out from the shop. The 200' drive and the parking area I'm leaving to get plowed out. When in the Sun and out of the wind, it felt much better. I waded through the snow to check things out in the back barn. The switches on the flashlight's I had back there were frozen! Never had that before.
I lived through that 1969 one....the temp never got above -20 C (0 F) for 26 straight days. And I have the certificate the Edmonton Journal put out to commemorate the event to prove it.
