PLEASE CLARIFY..Are you saying this is officially cancelled for this Saturday Phil?? That's the interpretation being put on it over on ROP.com (via someone there reading something on a LSPBC? site).
I still would like to hear it from Phil since he got this event started and scheduled, etc. + I'm assuming that this is the original web-board/forum for this event. Just want it clear so I can give others the info. Did Phil post it as "cancelled" on the other board? Thanks
weak.....at least last year we showed up in the rain and had a reason to drink beer in the parking lot. A bit more confirmed heads up would have been nice......
I disagree - while getting together and drinking beer in the parking lot is a good time, I want to do that AND go down a dry track. :beer :3gears: But it's pouring down cats and dogs here (Abilene) right now, there are tornado watches and hail down by San Angelo, and it's all headed easterly, be over by Waco tonight/tomorrow. Yuck. Driving 4 hours one way through rain on a chance it'll clear off and dry out just doesn't seem like all that much fun to me. :idea2: It pains me to see it cancelled for this weekend, but glad to see a rain date. Besides, this is Palm Sunday weekend and I'd have had to leave mid-afternoon and miss out on all of the local "show" that apparently goes on. And THANK YOU PHIL for taking your time to head this up. :TU: :TU: :TU:
If I may jump in here please since I am co-person on putting on this event. Myself and Phil talked about this at length and decided cancelling the event was the best thing to do. A lot of people spend a lot of time and money to get ready and go to this event and even though beer drinking and hanging out in the parking lot is cool we want to go racing and the weather was just not going to cooperate. We spoke to the track owner on Thursday, he said even if it didn't rain on Saturday it would be hard to get the race in. He has one low spot on the track where water runs across, he said there would be nothing he could do about it's just a low spot on the track. Safety is #1, we must have a dry track. I'm sorry if everyone didn't get the word in time this was the best we could do. His April schedule was booked. May 5th was the first Saturday available so we took it. Thanks everyone see ya in May. PS we get to celebrate cinco de mayo the way it should hauling a$$ in a Buick!
Youz guyz absolutely did the right thing and handled it as well as anyone could. Thanks for all you do for everyone else. I wish all the people who look forward to this event knew how much time and energy you and Phil put into this; I do know and I appreciate you!
I certainly appreciate the work that has been done for this event and respect the safety aspect of the sport we all enjoy. I was a bit taken back to hear that the event was cancelled after spending a lot of money and late nights last week to insure that one of my cars would be able to make the event. I am a big boy and that does not hurt my feelings. My car is done and I now have a weekend to enjoy it. What I would have liked to seen was a bit more of a heads up. I checked the website Thursday night and found a confusing rain date statement. I checked it again Friday morning to find confirmation that it was officially cancelled. It is a bit frustrating to have to cancel your rooms and call your buddies that are driving in from other areas of the state and tell them to stand down all before 7:00 a.m.. I guess the joke is on me because I had to go to the Mozart at the Majestic (ballet). Which to be clear is not even close to drinking beer in the parking lot which is what we did last year for this event when it was rained out.
JMHO, but the decision to cancel was abolutely the best way to go due to the weather conditions & track conditions. It had to be a coordinated decision made by the track AND the event planners and was as timely as could be. There's probably a good sized list of pros & cons for those who planned to attend AND those who could not attend the one planned for today. I know of at least 2 guys who couldn't attend today but can most likely attend the May 5th rescheduled event. Let's all hope for bright sunny days on May 4th & 5th!:3gears: BTW grady11, where ya from and what name do you go by???? Steve
Well, the bright side is we have a rain date, and the beer will be a- flowin! Will you be able to make it on the 5th?
Guys thanks for the thoughts and comments. If I may state the reason David and I cancelled the race so late. (I do not have to do it but feel obligated to do so.) David and I spoke with the track owner on Thursday because of the Weather forecast. He stated if it rained at all on friday that we would need to cancel our event. He stated he had a low spot on his track. I asked where the low spot on the track was and he stated it was at the 1/8th mile mark. I said ok. So this is the premise for cancelling the event. At that time I confered with David and we both agreed to seek a rain date. The event was not cancelled at that point. It was only a precautionary measure to insure the race. I posted on this forum about the rain date but did not mention the cancellation because their was no cancellation at that point. Friday came and there was rain fall at the track this forced us to cancel the race. The track owner stated there was no way he could prep the track and mentioned he may cancel his own event based on the rain fall at the track. This is the reason for cancelling the race. It was in the hopes that rain would not fall and the track would be available for racing on Saturday morning. Thanks for Listening.
Thanks Phil. If I could look into the future and see what days were good for racing, you know I would be in another line of work. I know most of us that got rained out the last time did not want to go through the same thing again. Thanks again and see you on the 5th.
Frank, If you were asking me, Yes, I plan to attend on May 5th. Who'd want to miss the food, fun, and friends????? Hope to drag the prez of W.O.T. along with his Wildcat if at all possible! Steve
Took the words right out of my mouth (uh...keyboard ) You can't make a rain cancellation a week in advance. That's just the breaks when you are a racer. Phil and David made the right call. (And I'm not just saying that becouse I was one of the folks that couldn't make this weekend ) I'm not bitter, but the last, what, three times we've tried this we have been rained out. One time I litterally put in the trans to motor bolts and started the car and drove to the event. In Rusk you could have wrung me out like a sponge. I figured I'd wait out the "sprinkle" to put the street tires back on to drive to the hotel. Don't get me wrong; the after party is as important as the racing, but like James said, it doesn't make sense to drive to a wet track just to have an excuse to sit at the hotel and drink beer. I'm glad we didn't go for nothing. Frank can cancel the food poll... Cinco de Mayo---FAJITAS!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all you do, Phil and David
Phil and David definately made the right call. Friday's weather was brutal to the track. A good bit of wind damage to outbuildings, and the electricity was still out as of last night. I'm not sure how much rain fell at the track, but water is still standing EVERYWHERE. I'm glad everyone didn't have to make the trip for nothing.
I'll be there....the Cat may be a stretch though. Sorry for the rain dance guys, but it was the only way I could go. Rick
For everybodys information, the track was closed Saturday. It seems the weather knocked the electricity and damaged some of the buildings. Great call Phil. Raul
