Looking for assistance with the proper direction for my build: I came across a good deal on a 455 project, I personally have not purchased any parts for this build yet. All parts are from initial purchase. My goal is moderate performance 400-500 hp with good reliability and a great sound. Current parts list: Block: 1970 455 4.35 Bore (Fresh from machine shop) Alignment honed, bored, magnaflux, decked .008 Connecting Rods/Crank: Reconditioned Pistons: Wiseco Pro Tru Street 5543A4 Heads: Edelbrock 60049 (New untouched) Head Gasket: None Intake: Edelbrock B4B Cam: None Carb: None Timing/Oil system: None Oil pan: TA 1511 extra quart Headers: Doug 1" 7/8"
A 290-08H cam or even a 413 and a fresh 800 Quadrajet, head gaskets to get you to 10:1 compression, TA timing cover and oil pump assembly, TA roller rockers….you’ll be happy. Add a set of MT SS headers and be twice as happy!
Do you think a double roller Timing set is needed? also I don't believe TA makes rockers for the edelbrock heads unless I missed them. I believe they require a SBC 1.6 Rocker
Yes always a double, you are probably right I guess, never used Edelbrock s, roller rockers definitely.
I posted a thread about those heads being available. Jim Weiss chimed in with some important info. Worth the read.
Take your elderlybrock Head to a Local machinist have them gone though........ Those heads are NOT ready to run..... They are basically bare castings with all the parts... Your Block you say its a 1970 has the oil upgrades been done to it.....https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/400-430-455-block-id-prep-and-oiling-mods.214613/
I'm not sure about the oiling mods, I will check. I doubt it as nothing was noted on the machinist slip. Thank you.
For rockers Comp Ultra Pro Magnums are the best around $500 Use a composition gasket...fel pro hp is fine With no porting and a cam in 230~240s you'll get close to 500
It is...and can be a pain to get sealed ....and more $....the .027 would be my choice if you went with cometics the wiescos sit a little deep in the hole so they would help the compression Being it's all new you probably be fine with the cosmetics I use a THIN smear around the water ports on them out of habit
So those pistons have 8.30 cc valve reliefs, and 1.980 compression height? https://www.cspracing.com/wiseco-5543a4-pro-tru-street-buick-455-4-350-in-bore-piston/bjkf-5543a4/ I'm figuring they would be .040" in the hole. Your block was decked .008", so figure .032" in the hole. The Edelbrock heads have 68cc chambers. So with a Felpro .040" head gasket, I am getting 11.1:1 SCR.
X3, see what Jim Weise says about assembled out of the box Edelbrock heads, https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/edelbrock-60049-455-heads.385391/#post-3391092
Probably, I would use their High Performance gasket, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-1125 Not sure why you bought the pistons you did before coming here. IMHO, that was a mistake, there are way better choices. With 11;1, you'll have to be careful with cam choice if you want to run pump gas. Read this, http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/DynamicCR.html
Never owned a buick, or a classic car. I bought the car along with all the parts listed above as a package deal. I personally have not purchased anything individually for this yet, hence why I'm hear asking these questions.
I understand. Those are the wrong pistons to use. For one, they end up in the hole because of their compression height. They also don't have enough dish/valve reliefs, and that is what is pushing your compression to 11:1. You could get away with 11:1 with aluminum heads, but you would need a bigger cam to keep the DCR down to 8.0 or a bit below. There are custom piston choices that you can order with the right compression height and dish to get you about 10.5:1 SCR. You can then run a smaller cam with better street manners, and you'll easily make 500 HP.
