Im working on a 71 GS with a 73 455 engine. Engine internals are rebuilt, but the engine is not all buttoned up. still missing Carb and all Ignition components. I am considering this MSD set, it is a bit pricey. Is it worth it, anyone running this? https://www.jegs.com/i/MSD/121/8552...8f3ec1n4KRCwAhcwfdqijkFX-uBNjGuAaAgc2EALw_wcB
Save yourself a ton of money, and get the TA Performance equivalent. Buy the coil and wires separately. http://taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_725B https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-31193 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8200 http://taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1819A
Or this refurbished RTR MSD. I've bought refurbished Holley carbs that were perfect, except in a plain brown box. Warranty, Etc. Like Larry says, $ave $ome ca$h. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2350175052...EcNVg3TRSm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
That ebay one looks good. Would i need a Ignition Control Module Box with it? I plan to order as soon as I decide between the TA option and this one. I didnt plan to buy a Box too
If you're looking for stock appearing and reliability, the Lectric Limited breakerless ignition is tough to beat. You can use and old points distributor as a core and send the setup to Ken at Everyday Performance or someone local to you who is proficient in rebuilding/recurving distributors. I've had mine for a few years and am happy with it. Cold or hot starts are not an issue and the existing OEM distributor wire is utilized. I'm also using an OEM Delco-Remy coil. Todd Miller carries the ignitions on his site.
Treasure-yard Genuine GM HEI, select a good core that doesn't have wiped-out pivot pins or worn holes in the weights. Rebuilt as needed, and recurved including the vacuum advance. Buy decent plug wires, and a low-resistance carbon button to go under the coil. Tidy, reliable, inexpensive.
Ordered the Ebay MSD distributor. nabbed some 8.5 mm wires, and a coil. Thanks for the advice so far. I plan to order a carb very soon from Quadrajet Performance. With my Edelbrock performer intake, it wont use the stock heat riser type choke. Would my best bet be an electronic choke? Any Ideas on good ones, that work well with a Quadrajet and this Performer Intake?
If you’re only going to drive it in warmer weather, don’t bother with a choke, they can cause more headaches if not set up properly. It takes no more than a couple minutes for the engine to develop enough heat to not need one. I’d rather have to two foot it and feather the gas for that time than worry the choke isn’t turning off completely.
I didnt have plans to overwinter it, but driving in any season is at least a year off. Its a proper big project, if I am lucky it will be road worthy by 2025. Im in Oklahoma and the winters here get pretty cold. I kinda like the idea of a functional choke over no choke, but i do see your point
