I see people advertising here and on FakeBook their 3.5 turn lock to lock steering boxes as quick ratio. What did they take off that 3.5 is an improvement? What I took off my cars were 3.5 turns lock to lock. On my '70 Stage 1, I swapped in an '87 F41 Grand National gear box that I used adapters to keep my flared hoses. It is almost exactly 2.5 turns lock to lock and it is hitting the stops, not an internal limit inside the gear box. On my '71 GS 350 4-speed, I put a '69 Chevelle quick ratio steering box on it and it, too, is only 2.5 turns lock to lock and uses the factory hoses. It hits the stops on the steering arm also. There is nothing inside the box limiting the turn radius.
Under 13:1 or less than 3.5 turns lock to lock. But, what most people consider "quick" is 2.5 or "better" at 2.25 turns. (I have 2.x on both cars, and yes, for anyone that has not experienced it, 1 turn less lock to lock is a big difference.)
The 64 was something like 4 turns lock to lock. The change was a huge difference, The 68 may have been less 3.5 turns. Not as big a change but still much better.
The one for the 64 was by request and I used a little longer pitman arm. Car is lowered (all UMI and front disc spindles) so it is limited a small amount to prevent tires from rubbing. But I know how the car turns and very seldom do I have to make the dreaded 27 point turn... The 68 is a 12.7:1 box. I will go out and actually run the steering wheel through and post back the actual turns it takes.
What is this power steering you all speak of?? Both my cars are manual steering and have 4 inch rims up front..Now that's power steering...lol I did have a factory box on my car that was from a 71 GS 455 that was supposedly faster ratio than other stock units. I really didn't notice any improvement though. Have driven one with Hector's box and there was significant improvement.
