well , hopefully , my engine #2 block etc should be outa the machine shop shortly . so i decided to get going and start pulling the top end off of engine #1 , get little stuff out of the way etc . next : short block and muncie out . kinda planning on going auto i think . good excuse to pop the SP3 on quick and check hood clearance . 65 special FYI . -------------------------------- pulled a 750 from stock for a trial fit no spacer - maybe . 1" spacer like i was using with the Q-jet - maybe not . basic drop base 14 x 3 air cleaner set up . oem cast intake , q-jet and 1" spacer and same air cleaner fit under hood ok . -------------------------------- about 200 miles on it this last summer , seemed to run good overall - valve train stuff looks ok . cam looks nice . pretty clean in there . kens EP carb rebuild runs nice .
Del, can't help you with the 65 body style, but on my 71, SP3, a Corvette L88 drop base cleaner, 3-1/2" open element filter, Holley DP ,& a Wilson 1"tapered spacer fits under the GS hood by 1/2". A 4" filter was very uncomfortably close. An L88 drop base won't let you see the carb like yours is showing...
Make sure you have a double pumper with your SP3. Like Mary, I can’t comment on your hood clearance, but try the DP without the spacer, Cliff has said the drop base air cleaner assembly’s put the lid too close to the top of the carb screwing up the airflow. I may try mine without my 4 hole spacer AND my stock GS air cleaner assy. and see if I slow down, speed up, or no change.
that's mary-mary quite contrary a real trouble maker on here the mods should probably look into that ------------------------------ yeah my understanding is same - lid too close to top of carb and it screws with air flow or bleeds/metering etc .
I think Mark meant to say Mart Not Mary. The Y and T are next to one another on the keyboard. Unless Mark knows something we don't.
I used to run a 3" filter and thought the same abt low airflow due to lid being close. Then I ran a K&N filter lid, but thought the underhood bracing was disrupting air, so went to the 3-1/2" tall filter with the solid chrome lid. Seems to be the best!
Mary? well...The SP3 is like putting a spacer on the TA dp intake a 1 inch to be exact. You will need some kind of drop base cleaner if you use any spacers. Might get away with 1 inch but that is about it.
Now with Dels 65, the SP3 with Holley & no spacer & L88 base would probably fit a 4" tall filter easily, then you throw that notion away about the lid choking off airflow. I think we need to see what Mary looks like Mark. You did it now...
