If he cleaned it up, put a top on it, and got it running and driving he may get close to his price.. hard to tell from the pics, but looks like the RF fender has been replaced. Doesn’t it look blue on the inner structure?
I really like how this car is configured (color & options) and it's the same combination as red/white/white '72 GS455 convertible that my dad restored a few years ago for a customer/friend. So when I look at this project car for sale I can picture how it would look if restored. But after looking a little closer I notice the same thing that Louie mentioned which is the blue paint in the trunk jam and under the hood. So I wonder if the original color is red or blue? The price is out of line with current reality but the car looks to have potential and is certainly rare with only 126 '72 GS455 convertibles made. I'm loading a few of the photos to this thread so that when the ad disappears we will still have them here. I wouldn't be surprised if the car surfaces again in another ad before it finds a new owner. Sure how it gets saved, I really like the '72s a lot. How it could look restored as a red/white/white car:
Good eye, Gary. Makes it more desirable in my opinion as a factory blue and white car, but either color combo would look great. I know a lot of threads turn into a bashing, but I think we can all agree that this is a car priced too high.
Priced too high yes, but as I said in the OP, if it's truly rust free, that's worth a premium IMHO. Agree, personally I'd like the blue better. Edit - Even the doorpanels & seats look to be in decent (if not better) shape.
It appears to be a darker shade of red than the original color used by Buick and blue paint appears to be visible here in the door jamb too. Probably a blue car originally. If it's a solid car the color it would not be critical for me although I do prefer red, Flame Orange, and Sandalwood. A white top and white interior look great with any paint color. If the rear rear quarters have never been hit and only have some minor rust at the bottom that would be a huge bonus in my eyes since a nice convertible 1/4 panel is tough to find.
1972 Buick GS 455 Convertible (craigslist.org) I am working on getting a pic of the data tag and also have requested at minimum for him to supply the 2nd and 5th characters in the VIN. His only reply so far is. Call me it was originally Blue over white. I left him a message. I would go $28 for a project if it truly is low or no rust and a factory 455 GS. I will share anything further.
Good luck! The rust free part is the $. If so and numbers matching drivetrain, $28k isn't unreasonable IMHO. I'd probably start at $25k and see where it winds up.
Talked to the current owner, seems legit. He purchased from a Buick guy who states it is numbers matching. Says he will supply me a vin or partial vin, picture of data tag and a picture of a picture in the original colors. I will keep you guys informed.
Guy's this car checks out in my honest opinion, which is worth what you paid for it. Seller told me he's known the previous owner for 20 years, that owner finally let it go three years ago and current Guy realizes he will never get around to it. He always loved the car but is not very knowledgeable about Buicks? Doesn't know what it has for gauges or power seat. but believes it is all there and correct. He posted it for sale and kind of just hasn't given it much thought since. It does sound like he really does want it to sell though. Hey you tried! Can you share the partial vin? It looks like a factory GS 455 from the photos, but an H would only dictate that it was built in flint as the 7th digit. Should start as 4G67U2.. I worry that he admits he doesn’t know much about Buicks, but also confirms in the ad that it’s matching numbers. That takes some research for anyone. I think 28K for a non running project is hard for anyone to stomach, regardless of what it is. It’s important to get eyes on it. I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it. The car certainly deserves to be saved and doesn’t look too bad from the pics, even though they are crappy. Also- anyone who repaints a stratomist car red should be fined
I'd have to see it in person to check out the rust/numbers/etc. but it'd be worth flying out for a day to lay eyes on it & getting a Sloan Report & having transported if I was seriously interested.
