why dont you use a LS .... JUSTTTTTTT KIDDDDINNG very cool project... i am ready to finally see a 455 Twin build. will you use EFI?
because I have taste and a willingness to overcome insurmountable odds with a liquid cooled checkbook. yes, MS3x and crank fired ignition....
My bad to get off topic but jw I have a 66’ skylark custom red and white convertible 455 big block with Holley efi sniper and mild cam and headers and intake manifold and air filter and aluminum 3 row radiator and fan and more it had a dual plane intake manifold and dual Holley 850cfm 4 barrel carburetors but insane hassle and unless just use at track and adjust it after every time then it would be worth it but still feels like picked up more power once EFI installed also so I think installing Holley sniper efi system adds more power then dual 4 barrel Holley carbs do and all that but first does anyone know what size is the biggest 15” tires you can put on the car without rubbing or custom modifications like 225/75R15s or 235/75R15s? And second if you can’t get a fan shroud for that big block 455 and it has new 3 row aluminum radiator and aftermarket mechanical fan can you just install a electric pusher fan I front of the radiator too make up for the shroud and would an extra fan on front of radiator and the one on the back pulling and pushing air same way make up some for no shroud? And lastly if anyone’s knows best gear ratio for 455 with th400 auto 3 speed auto non overdrive or my car at around 75mph does 3400 to 3500 rpms with no overdrive 3 speed automatic transmission what would be the best possible gear ratio for it for lowest rpms on the highway without having to install overdrive but at same time not losing too much power for in town or sometimes racing i guess lol maybe like 3.08 or 3.23 or 3.42 or 2.97 or 2.87 maybe? And thanks again and sorry for being off topic here again but any help would be huge help can’t find anything on internet so finally just putting on a forum post lol
I started you a new post: https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/66-skylark-discussion-for-gearing-etc.369981/
as no one seems to like my non-LS powered builds, I'll keep posting to spite y'all oil pan doesn't fit time to get all the parts down to find what I've got and what I don't have I have enough head bolts for 3 motors... great! yes, I paid big dollars for 8:1 compression pistons... and aluminum heads someone asked about exhaust.... I'm going to make it highly recommend this book and intake and valve covers missing freeze plugs, I have to timing covers but neither are perfect (and I'm still leaning towards a scavenging system), the oil pan needs a massage but I may simply build a new one, need to drill for injectors then plumb it, I also need to talk to the machine shop... a friend was 'managing' the build.... but never told me what was and was not done - it appears the passages might have been opened up but I don't know....
I love "use what you have" while you have actually great parts lol. Make fit what doesnt fit. I assume you are looking for 12 +psi I am still hoping Richard Holdener will continue on his stock Buick 455/boost test. I'm so tempted to throw boost on my stocker...
Please don't use that book, " How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines" as a bible. A lot of misleading and missing info in there. It was a good "attempt" but fell short (in my opinion) to cover some very important info. Check with people like Jim W. or Mike T. to cover the "must do's" to make that engine "live". There are four spots on that steel pan that will hit the girdle..... two spots on the rear of the pan and two at the front. They're quite easy to "clearance" with a sand bag and round face mallet. WAY easier than building one from scratch!! LOL Build a deep sump for it though, and include front and rear baffles. A OEM rear sump will NOT be large enough to control the oil with the type of application that you're doing. Looks like an interesting build....... keep up the good work!!!
Since I started this thread.... my resume includes (and there are several others not pictured here) this 1976 became this 1970 became this 1971 became and lest you think it's checkbook. I did everything, including the paint on the '40. The others, I took to a shop who shot it in their booth (which mostly was a mistake on my part because I did better in my shop).... this thread got slowed down because that motor took 6 years and two machine shops to get the machine work done... and at this point, only the machine work is outsourced... reluctantly. and hovering in the background is m 64 Buick Special wagon (with the alluded-to 6.0 LS). Hopefully by next week, both Buicks will be in the shop then it will be time to get serious.
just sitting, waiting its turn. Buinicorn is my current, major project on deck. That said, I'm also doing finish touches on the Corvette for this year's racing... thus, NBR content
Interested in your exhaust/turbo manifold approach. Also, wish I could've found wet manifolds for my Lund fishing boat for a 455. Had to settle for an LS7. Especially since it's a Lund Tyee GS.
