For an oil change on my standard differential i used Valvoline GL-5 80w90 axle oil. The bottle does not mention hypoid. There is a small sign on the bottle's decal of a hypoid gear set but the word hypoid is not used. How can i be sure this oil is suitable for the hypoid axle? Thanks.
Looks like your covered on the Valvoline product web site?!.... Valvoline™ High Performance Gear Oil : Product Catalog - Valvoline™
Thanks. But i have an older black bottle that says axle oil and not gear oil. And my bottle does not mention High Performance.
If it doesn't list the hypoid added heat and wear additives; I would buy the updated product ( Any 75W-90 GL-5 rated gear oil = hypoid gear oil ).
This is what I use, https://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-VV...=hypoid+gear+oil+sae+80&qid=1618094092&sr=8-6 It is GL-4 (Hypoid) and GL-5
If you study the compounds, the GM,Ford, and Chrysler additive really is different than some of the general additives found at the stores, which is also why the size of the bottle is smaller. However,I have used your typical TransX in some of my own personal units, and it works fine as well. If you are having that much of an issue with the differential working correctly,it’s not the additive,it’s the unit. You want to run conventional oil with ANY/ALL clutch and cone type posi units. NO synthetics or fancy oils that claim to have something already in it. 80/90 or 85/140. Unless you have a Tru Trac,Detroit Locker,or spool, where no additive is needed, and you can run synthetics with those.
