Temporarily thinking about the column mount. Just cause I need a tach sooner than later. The factory reproduction one would be real nice. My project originally was going to be a $1500 freshen up project and has now hit $5500 lol. my wife has been really cool about it so far but another $190 on a part right now.... gutter work has slowed for the winter. might have to wait. I can use the $50 parts store one for now and use it later on in another vehicle when I decide to upgrade the skylark tach.
Are you going to use the tach for shifting or is it just another gauge to look at? If the latter, for a temporary mount use a pedestal mount upside down under the dash. There are plenty of existing hole to use as well. That way it does not block the dash gauges.
Check with Larry, maybe he'll give you a fit your budget price on his. Look how nice they look in the dash.....

When I got my GS400, the PO had installed a SUN 3 3/8 tach under the dash. It was too difficult to see down there at a glance, so I moved it to the column. Even though my car is has the floor shifter, the back section of the column still moves with the floor shifter. I used a 4" hose clamp from Home Depot, and there is just barely enough room to get it around the back edge, of the section of the column behind the steering wheel (the part that doesn't move with the shifter). I had to get it on the edge, so the column would still tilt to the up position, and the band would clear the ignition switch and slot for the tilt lever. This has been the same with every GM A-body that I've had and installed a tach in. Sorry, this is the only photo I currently have of it... I'll try to get some more later, if you need them.
Well, now that other years are in play.... My '64 Skylark with tach in place of clock and oil, temp, batt gauges. And my '68 Skylark with tach in place of clock and oil, temp, batt, trans temp, trans press gauges. Back in the '70s I had the old "tach on the column", but I never much cared for the "look". Just wanted everything to look like it was purposed, and not afterthought. (but, damn, I loved that car!)
Column mount provides that nostalgic muscle car look. But things will be tight with my column shifter. In dash will probably be what I go with.
Yea, it wasn't in great shape, and I didn't pay much for it, so I decided to modify it. The tach cup has an early 60's Pontiac vacuum gauge, with a couple of 2 1/16 gauges added, plus two short cupholders.
