Has anyone here purchased the reproduction 3-piece set of grille trim from The Parts Place for a ‘70 GS? Fit? Finish? Comparison to originals? Thanks!
I put them on Mike's car. I will look at them closer tomorrow. There were a couple things that I noted but I can't remember right now. I think overall they were nice.
I just went and looked at the one I have installed. The only thing that I noticed is that the center section wants to twist up in the middle. So there is a gap under the trim...see photos
I am going from memory here, so take that under advisement.. it's been at least 10 years since I put one of the factory pieces on a new grill.. but I recall that the factory trim has two areas on the underside of that center piece, one on each side of the center, where the material is punched, and then bent up, so it contacts the grill.. I have a couple original pieces of that center trim, that I can dig up and take a pic for you if you like.. I suspect the repop trim does not have that feature, hence the gap.. The Parts Place supplies many other vendors with their parts for resale, most of these repop parts there is only one source for, regardless of where you buy it. JW
I think they are there, Jim...but it seems like the way they are welded together makes it not fit perfectly. I'll check to make sure the cuts are there on the underside in a bit.
Those relief cuts are on the repro bottom trim piece. It's hard to see if I was able to get them to engage the slots in the grille, though. Looking closer at the center piece where it is bowed up, imagine if you were able to cut that top weld and allow the piece to settle down. That is the issue there. Looking at the grille straight on, you can't really see it.
Kudos to you for reminding us of this fact! Many vendors will not be direct about this .... There have been other threads on repro parts quality lately; there is always give and take with trying to bring these rides back to full glory or even functionality!!
I recently put a set on and the center section laid flat as it should. The only thing I had issue with was the screw holes on “J” piece, they weren’t countersunk. But I remedied that easily
It could also be...... inconsistent quality. You just never know when it comes to aftermarket parts. Are you buying the best repops or are they pulling from the flawed pile when you order?
