Found this custom steering wheel online that is fairly close to our sport wheels. It's 14 inches in diameter, wrapped in leather and supposed to come with an adapter for our 70-72 GS. Also has a nice horn cap as a option. Has anyone got this one? Might be a nice add-on for those of us who would like a padded wheel and don't want to spend $500+ to have one made. https://www.autoobsession.com/volan...mvehiclesimpalacamarochevellefirebirdetc.aspx
I've got an inquiry to the manufacturer asking if our factory horn ring and adapter would fit this wheel so we wouldn't have to buy their aftermarket horn ring. Also found a better price at Summit Racing. $122 with free shipping. I'll post again when I get an answer. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vat-st3014tan
Just received a reply from the CSR at Volante, the manufacturer of the S6 steering wheels. Basically, the wheel will bolt right up to our steering wheel hubs and our horn rings and adapters will also bolt right up. Since their center section is a one-piece and our sport wheels are two piece, they also sell an adapter to take up the space at the bottom of our hubs. The part number for the adapter is SWA SPACER BLACK or Chrome. I'm going to order one of the tan ones for my Sandalwood interior. They also offer it in several other colors. This wheel is also 14" so it's an inch narrower than our '71 & up sport wheels. I kind of like that. Here is the message as I received it from Volante: "We manufacture our S6 steering wheels with the correct GM bolt pattern to allow them to work for these instances. Your horn cap and its mounting kit will cross over to any of our S6 wheels. As far as our tan leather, it is on the lighter side of the measure in comparison to your dash. I would say it is close to the color of your column which could still look nice overall for your interior. One thing you may want to add is our filler plate. The tan/brushed wheel we offer ( part # ST3014TAN ) is a single piece center where as your grip in the photo is a 2 piece. See photos…If you don’t mind a wood wheel our S6 classic wood wheel may look nice if you are set on complimenting the dash. This wheel is very popular for all GM restorations. "
Ray, thanks for checking this out. You can use the Olds hub it does not have the cut out at the bottom. Nelson
Great to know that. The adapter for the cutout is $14. How much do you think I can buy an Olds hub for? And, I might want to keep my Buick hub in case I want to reinstall the original wheel. But, great to know there is another way to do it.
The Volante S6 wheel came in today (FedEx on Sunday?) and I installed it with my stock horn ring. I like it and it gives a nice feel while driving. Now I'll have to dye or paint the horn ring to match.
I would say the tan compliments your interior and the design is close enough to original that it "works". Its a bit more modern looking but if comfortable, its a winner!
Yes, I'm deciding whether I should dye it or not and it's really comfortable to steer while driving. My quick ratio steering is very sensitive and the 1 inch lower diameter tends to tone that down just a bit.
I must say I think the horn button looks good too. It kind of matches the color of the wood on the console and all ties together well.
I had (car has been sold) a tilt steering wheel so I could adjust it so as not to block the gauges. But, without a tilt wheel you might have to move around a bit to see portions of the speedo and tach.
