Several years ago I got on a cop car kick. Here are a couple cars that I built back then. This one is a 1994 Crown Vic, and it was a real cop car. I had it painted in matte black and added the push bumper and lights. This one is a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Mercury did make cop cars off and on over the years, but this was not one of them. It was a standard black Grand Marquis. I blacked out the grille and all the chrome, added the black wheels, push bumper and lights. Those two are long gone, but I just acquired this one. It's a 1988 Caprice and it's a real cop car. In '88, the cop car was the only Caprice available with a 350 cubic inch engine. Of course, it has the cop suspension, cop brakes and all the other goodies, including factory gauges, which were not available on the civilian Caprice. This car has never been in service and only has 30,000 miles on it. The original owner was a vendor of police equipment and used it as a demo car. The gentleman I purchased the car from was a police chief in a small town in Alabama. He only used the car in parades. The blue lights, wig-wag headlights, siren, radio, and shotgun rack all work.
Wow - That is a one of the cleanest surviving 9C1 Caprices I have seen, very rare. I had an 89 assigned to me in another life and given performance standards at the time it moved and handled pretty well.
Cool car! My wife had an ‘85 Impala (not a 9C1) that was gunmetal grey, no vinyl top, no extra chrome. Everyone we followed would slow down. Would you mind posting pics of the guages and such? Patrick
In MO, it's not illegal to possess them. It is illegal to use them unless you're authorized. I keep them covered when I'm on the road.
Driving a cop car and impersonating a cop are two extremely different things. It's illegal to impersonate in every state.
Once in a while I'll look for a 74 Monaco. They go for good money. That's definitely my favorite movie of all time.
That Caprice is cool Does the 350 Chevy that year have any different specs. for "cop duty" verses a standard 350 Chevy? What gears are in back? Im going to guess 3.08 if NO overdrive, 3.42 WITH overdrive, oh wait a second, doesn't the 700 R4 stay in 3rd gear at WOT? So maybe 3.08 max. Any pics of the engine bay and chassis?
Seems like in my area a lot of people like buying old police and state cars in order to push people out of the way on the highway. Everyone thinks its an officer behind them so they move out of the way. You see them pass you and its a worn out old POS state car lol. I always hate that. I did see one guy went a step further and cleaned his old one up as well as tinted the windows so you couldn't see he was not a police officer. I like seeing the old cars preserved its kinda cool.
Very nice, rare find. Is the back seat vinyl like most were? I have owned a couple cop cars as well. Last one was a Dodge Diplomat.
The 9C1 had a 350 whereas the civilian Caprice was stuck with a 305. I’m not sure on the axle ratio. I have all the option codes from the RPO sticker in the trunk, but haven’t taken the time to look them up. Yes, the back seat is vinyl.
