I have an ongoing argument with a buddy who thinks BBB are not fast, he thinks that New stuff is fast and old stuff is slow, I tell him about the Top 50 Fastest Muscle Car list from around 1984, but can't seem to find it to print ( help please). Anyway he is always bring up new cars and other list, I tell him CLASSIC MUSCLE CARS, pre 1980... Then there's Modern Muscle Cars post 1980.....Anyone agree with me?
New stuff is fast, old stuff is fast. But some new stuff is faster than some old stuff... Here is the original 50 Fastest list AND the revised 50 Fastest List (in three parts with some overlapping). And some modern stuff but not up to date...
Thanks very much....I'm saying combine apples to apples....I say separate New from Classic around 1980 works for me...
Not a real comparison. since a lot of the new stuff have power adders. and where is the 429 torino that runs in the low 13's in stock trim? Anyway there are very fast cars being built and all these cars were "tuned" before being tested
I've spent the last ten years working on line forums selling Ford and Ford Racing parts and while big block Buicks will always be the ultimate car for me I've learned a very deep respect for modern Mustangs in particular the Terminators, GT500s and the new 5.0 Coyote cars. Coyote cars can run 12s with little more than a tune and when you throw boost at them the sky is the limit. Ford Racing actually just went 12.56 with the new 2.3 turbo in the '15 Mustang with very minor mods and a pump gas tune. Like it or not they are insanely fast, easy to mod, incredibly reliable and totally civilized and can even still get decent mileage while being capable of 700hp at the touch of the gas pedal. That said, put a well built '69 Skylark and a '13 GT500 in front of me and offer up the keys and I'll be driving home in that '69 every time. -Steve
I like em all. Even AMC had some fairly quick cars in 70. Fact is there wasn’t a whole lot of difference between the big 3 musclecars. Every manufacturer had a variety of engines for different buyers. Brand loyalty is very strong and manufacturers advertise toward that end. I was at the drags regularly in 70-71 at Woodburn Oregon. A lot of brand new musclecars were there. NO stock muscle car on street tires out there would run better than mid 13s. Fastest car was always a 66 396/425 hp vetted on 7 inch cheaters at 13.0s! Next fastest was a 66 L79 Nova on 7”cheaters at13.20s.Two 70 GSs,husband/wife team we’re low 14s each. Six barrel Roadrunners were lower 13s on 7” slicks.Ford IMHO was dead meat.
Funny you should mention this, my oldest brother used to race US-31 drag strip with his lemonwood yellow 66 L79 Chevy II. Ran bottom 13's and could beat all comers in the stock class except a certain 427 vette, just cheater slicks were allowed.
It should be there but the modern lists I found on the internet at the time (2014) were not complete. Plus, they are way out of date five years later!
I like them all, but technology has made the newer muscle cars faster, safer and more comfortable. You can't beat the looks and mystique of an early muscle car, but without modifications, most are not as fast as what comes out of the factories today. What many forget is the fact that we wouldn't have today's cars if it weren't for people who were innovative enough to invent the parts and the technology used to modify the early cars to make them faster, handle better and more reliable. A lot of owners of early muscle, including some on V8Buick, are resto-modding their cars with today's technology to improve various areas like power and handling. I like them all, old and new, as long as they have the looks, etc. to pique my interest.
