1/2 tank 91 octane fuel, new filter, same reaction. pulls to 5300 in 1st, hit 2nd starts to fall on its face at 4500-5000rpm. i'll change the springs in dist. to come all in a little later. any other suggestions? keith
Sounds like you need more fuel pump. You can confirm it by teeing in a fuel pressure gauge and taping it to the wind shield.
i may have to, as soon as i can figure how to route it without having to take the hood off. had it out yesterday, rollin in 3rd at about 55mph, 2300rpm, dropped it into 2nd to pass a car, once i got to about 4000rpm it faltered and started to fall on it's face again. i would'nt think it would be running out of fuel in that instant, my foot wasn't that deep into it. keith
I noticed you have an HEI. Sometimes, the coil in the cap can run hot and fail at higher RPM. It is definitely nosing over, not missing correct? If you want a really good mechanical pump, you can get RobbMc to put a 350 arm on this pump. http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/buick550.html I believe Mark Demco did exactly that.
yes, nosing over like someone just turned out the lights. i had to replace the button inside the cap after just 2-3 thous. miles because compared to the one from the v6 that i replaced it with it had burned down quite a bit. yes, if i have to go with a new mech pump thats the way i'm gonna go. i followed his posts on that keith
finally getting some time to work on it again, had it out and when it started to nose over at about 4200 rpm,( in second after taking to 5300 in 1st ) stayed in it for a few sec. and it was pulsating? ordering fuel pressure gauge today keith
took the car out yesterday with the fuel pressure gauge installed, cruisin in 3rd about 2300 rpm, 4.25psi, drop it down to 2nd and floor it, pressure drops to 0 pretty quick. from a dead stop, 1st gear, pulls hard to 5500rpm with pressure dropping quick, hit 2nd, falls on it's face, 0psi. gonna run a pusher pump on it with a toggle switch because the mech. pump does just fine when cruisin. keith
Not sure if you can run a pusher pump with the standard 350 pump. I know it works with the Stage1 455 pump with the deeper pump body. If it does work, keep in mind that the pusher pump presents an added restriction to fuel flow, so while your current pump does just fine while cruising, it may not with the pusher pump inline, and that will require the pusher to be on all the time. I think your money is better spent on the Robb Mc pump. Just my .02. Been there, done that.
I had a high flow mechanical pump on my old 350 that was made for it. It was mfg. by Carter if I recall, but I could be wrong and it may not be made anymore - This is going way back
TA sells a pump for the 350 that they say is good for 500 HP. Maybe someone has used it and can say one way or the other. http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1534A Mark Demko got Robb Mc to put a 350 arm on this pump, http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/buick550.html
That kind of looks like the one I had, sans the chrome. That car ran 13 flat & certainly never starved for fuel.
Yes, Robb Mc built me one of their 550 pumps (for the 455 Buick) for my 350:TU: They put the 350 pump arm on it, actually Larry suggested I give 'em a call to see if they do that, and they do, its custom made but works awesome. I had called TA about their better pump for the 350, they don't sell it anymore
I guess Rob Mc may be our only option now for high volume 350 mechanical pumps. Just when T/A is making some cool 350 parts for what I always felt was a very underrated engine. I remember my first Buick 350 in my Jeep Wagoneer when I was 16 and started calling places (geez, what we had to do without the internet @ 3AM) to get an aftermarket 4 bbl intake only to find none existed.
so i installed a holley red elec. fuel pump with a rocker switch on my shifter console to turn it on when needed, mech pump struggles to keep up when i have to go up a long hill,( i live in a valley at 6000ft elev. so everywhere i go is up hill). gonna run a bypass at elec. pump with a check valve so mech pump doesn't have to pull through elec. pump. i have done a few short wot's with pusher on without any issues and try to get out this wknd for some good testing before t&t on the 10th of this month. keith
My car ran 11.70 with a stock, old fuel pump.Whatever you have been doing to the tank, fuel line etc is very good, but I notice one thing, you stated that you have stock old springs in the car, maybe its time to put some new springs there, high rpm wants good stiff springs,no springs,no rpm.May be that will help.Just a thought ,Bruno.
That's what I did when I had my Regal. When you were going up hill under heavier throttle or tried to pass somebody with the electric OFF it would starve the engine. I installed a one way valve around the electric and it worked fine under normal conditions. I only used the electric for racing. I actually used a 3/8" in/out PCV valve as the bypass. No regulator needed with the red pump either. I believe they are internally regulated to 5 psi which is plenty. Bruno, that must have been the best 455 factory pump ever. My Stage 1 pump would only hold 2 lbs when I was running low 13's/high 12's with the factory lines and bypass blocked.
