Hi, I know this question is like starting a conversation about politics, or what truck is better Ford, Chevy, or Dodge...... I'm a Ford guy myself, lol. I have been searching threads and I see a big variety of personal preference on this issue. I have been running a NAPA oil filter for the past two seasons but I was thinking about trying a Delco filter this year. I also read that some people like the PureOne filter. What filter do you guys like and is there a reason why? Thanks...
I have an entire case of k&n filters for the Buick. I've always had good results with their products, they seem to be well made, and I got them on sale from a local store for a stupid cheap price! I run Wix on all my dd's just because I've always read they were a good product. I figure you see them often times on heavy equipment and semi's, must mean something (hopefully it translates to passenger cars...)
Post 4, lol, this is where the politics heat up. I've used Fram filters for decades without an oil related failure. YMMV. Also, posted here somewhere, and I'm too lazy to look, is a thread that condemns Wix filters. Just sayin'...and I'm currently running that very condemned (Wix) filter. I do what I do based on my own personal experience and observations, not necessarily on others' opinions. This is based on a lifetime of observations about reality, and how people handle it.
System1 reusable filter here. Been using it for at least 10 years now with both engines. Expensive yes, but it's the last filter you'll ever buy, and you can inspect it anytime you want. http://www.ebay.com/itm/System-1-Sp...Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d218742f6&vxp=mtr When I bought mine years ago, they were about 75.00 new. You can find them used for cheaper. http://www.ebay.com/itm/System-1-Ra...Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e99e8e150&vxp=mtr
Consider www.bobistheoilguy.com as your first and last resource for all things oil and lubricant related. Tons and tons and tons of topics there, with factual evidence to support those topics.
Can't stand Fram oil filters. Had to change one on my friend's plow truck last month....started leaking right thru the case. Personally witnesed Fram filters causing an oil related tick on Buick engines.....both fixed by replacing with a Purolator filter. Wix/Napa is fine too. Once upon a time, Delco was a good one to use.....heard they have gone down hill since.
I use the Napa filters. Fram almost killed the engine on my mom's Camry. The filter has a rubber ring at the top of the filtering material. Well, a piece of that the rubber seal broke off and mostly plugged up the main oil passage in the engine. The oil light would briefly and randomly come on then go off. So after checking multiple things, we took it to our mechanic. After flushing it out he found the piece of rubber. It looked as if the rubber had been pinched between the housing and whatever else, causing it to break off. Between that and the other problems I've heard people having, I wouldn't use one if it was the only filter available. The rubber ring is in the red box in the pic.
Wix in three cars. When FRAM filters were made in Ontario, Canada prior to the sale to Tenneco (?), they were quality units.
The 51258 Wix filter is the best filter for the money out there. While there are plenty of other options, they all come at a higher cost, or higher labor issues with disassembling and cleaning re-useable filters. This wix filter is also sold by Napa in the "Gold Series" with PN 1258. 6-8 bucks at your local auto parts store, thankfully they fit a wide range of early GM cars, and they typically are still stocked. I get mine from the local O'Reilly auto parts store. Try one, you will like it. JW
Thanks for all the replies, I guess just like politics and pickup trucks it is more a matter of opinion than anything. I have been running the NAPA gold on the Buick so I guess I will just stick with that. I ran the PureOne on all my daily drivers for years with no issues but I have been running the factory Motocraft for the past couple years. The only one that I really have heard horror stories about are the Fram filters, I would be scared to try those but a ton of people use them every day. Thanks Again.
Bosch - but it is smaller (i.e., a little less capacity). Mostly because it is available on a moment's notice at Autozone, it fits, and has antidrainback.
Just an FYI, Ford Motorcraft filters scored second or third lowest in all single and multiple pass efficiency tests. Mobil one is your best bet as far as filtration and quality of build goes, but napa and wix are great products!
I've been running Bosch for the last 10 years or so. They are 10 micron filters with 98% flow efficiency, same as a K&N at half the price! The Buick filter is 3430 which is a long filter.
