I'm trying to remove the grille (1970 Skylark) and it doesn't want to come out, all rear studs are unscrewed (well, actually 1 since the others are all broken ) Is there anything under the bumper that's holding it in, since that seems to be where the problem is, or do I have to remove the front bumper to remove the grille (??)
Yes, there is a body coloured molding that is attached to the grille and wraps under the bumper. You dont have to completely remove the bumper (but it helps). You can remove the front bolts, loosen the rear bolts, slide the bumper forward untill it clears said molding and let it drop down and out of the way. Hope that helped. Take Care
You will see the screws when you drop the bumper down far enough. They don't have to be removed to take the grille off though. Take Care
Best I could do. The blue piece across the bottom is held on by 4 self tapping screws. Dont worry about them untill you get the grille off.
The 4 screw holes in the pic hold the thin body colored metal strip the people above talked about to the grille. That's all they do, they don't attach to the bumper.
OK, so the blue painted piece in the pic is not the thin metal strip in question? I may be missing a piece if that's the case ---------- Post added at 11:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 AM ---------- Also, does anyone reproduce the "skylark" grille script?
Yes, the blue painted strip IS the metal piece we were referring to above. If you removed it you would see the bottom lip of the grille itself to which it attaches. If you Photoshopped the blue part in the above picture from blue to gray plastic grille color, that is what the grille itself would look like with the metal strip part removed. Making sense now? This whole part curves under the top edge of the bumper, and is the reason the bumper must be lowered to get the grille out.
OK, got it. That explains why the repro GS grille on the web had the screw holes facing the other wayou: Now I have to go back and see if I actually have both pieces, my grille is silver on the bottom. Geez, one of the more complex grilles I've seen...
Wow, they look so similar, I did not notice this before. I'm not even sure that mine has a metal strip there, does anyone reproduce them?
