New XP user can't get on the board...

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by David Gramlow, Nov 11, 2003.

  1. Here's what he's told me, besides the fact he just bought a new Compaq XP machine. Can anyone help this guy out? I've already had him lower his settings for security and privacy, still has same problem.

I think its just a standard informational message.

Remember that little box the one member used to include in his threads that showed your IP address? I'm guessing we all send our info each time we sign on. Don't think I'd worry about it.

sounds like he has his security settings too high. He has it set to prompt him if there is a possible security risk. Disclosing your IP is mandatory so I would not be worried about it going over the 'net.

Yes, the member is CIT, and here is his signature :Brow:

  5. No, his internet connection is actually terminated when he loads the board. Sounds like he can get on other sites though. I already had him drop his security to low, and privacy to low.

    Firewall?

Maybe the computer came w/a firewall program installed that he doesn't know about? Could be running in the background and for some reason doesn't like this board and disconnects the connection as a failsafe. Have him check all the icons in the task tray to see if one of them is a firewall program.

XP Must have been designed by a bunch of Chevy fans:spank: :spank:

  8. It beats the heck out of 98/98SE... 98 loaded like molasses, crashed almost daily. I have not had a single problem with XP in a year and a half. The XP firewall is disabled by default. I use mine without issue with the board. I will have him tell me what all is running in the task tray.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones - my home PC is WIN98 and I have had no problems since 1999...

...now where's some wood to knock...

Don't get me wrong david.... I wan't knocking XP. Just making a joke on how the only site he can't get into was the Buick site:grin:

FWIW... I use XP at work and 98 at home (Since it came out) and have no probs with either. I do prefer the classic view of XP (Professional version??) over the MSN Look of it:gt:

The only good thing about 98 now is that I usually don't have to worry about the "New" viruses, as they are mostly geared for NT, 2000, and XP:grin:  , not many of us 98 users to warrant infecting anmore I guess:rolleyes:

    xp ?

about 18 months ago , we spent 1 workday testing & messing with xp pro . next day we tested win2000 pro . in the end we easily decided to unleash win2000 pro on all our replacement pcs & in-car terminals (panasonic ruggedized laptops) . we have not regretted it . we even convinced our municipal counterparts (1000 pcs) to deploy win2000 on on their new pc purchases .
i have worked with xp but prefer win2000 , handsdown . we are also nt4 users on some of our servers .
