Has anyone seen a 455 Buick powered dragster put up any big numbers? I know a lot of folks don't like dragsters and prefer Buick bodied door slammers, just curious if anyone has said they just want to go as fast as possible with a BBB  I'm going to have my current project GS done by this summer and then start on a "racecar". I have a gutted out GS clone already, just don't know if I'd go with a back half car, full chassis set up or dare I say dragster p
Melvin Jackson of Jacksonville,FL had 2 in the late 80's. 1 rearengine and one frontengine. I don't remember the times he ran. I had bought his G/SA car in the mid 80's.He raced at Gainesville raceway and the Gator nats. I don't know what happened to the cars. I lost his number, but he could help you. I have sold the G/SA car to "Mr. Big" on the website. He has talked with Melvin about the history of my old car,so he should have the number. I think the front engine pulled a whellie and came down and broke some parts and his son didn't like sitting around the rearend while driving.Hope this helps some . Mike Nussell
A BBB raced at the GS nationals many years ago. Can any of you old timers fill us in about this dragster?
I can verify that Mr. Jackson raced two different 455 powered dragsters...He still has the 455 out in his garage that was run in the second/rear engined car. Perhaps someone else from the Jacksonville area remembers seeing him run and can recall how fast this car was?
I seem to remember some low 9 sec runs at BG in the early 90's with BBB and a smaller dragster ran by Mike Christensen ( sory if I misspelled ) also in the 9 sec and a altered that was a second slower
We used to run a front engine dragster with a 70 electra motor, pulled out of the car, reringed and bearings, put a cam in it, had very mildly ported stg 1 heads. The car ran 9.75 at around 147 at 4000 feet. Jim Burek
There was a dragster back in the early mid to early 90s that ran at BG.I cant remember his name, but they called him toad.I believe he was from mexico missouri.Larry moore(from mexico missouri ) was buddies with him.I think it ran 8.90s , but cant exactly remember.
Well eventually im going to get into a pipe rack and it will be buick powered so that should be hot. :blast:
there was a comp eliminator team in Oregon back in the late 90's that ran in the 8.90 range a couple of times during testing. I sold them my new kenne Bell wildcat manifold to use on it. the car ran 9.90 regularly
I've got a rear engine 212" wheelbase Jacobson dragster. I ran it 2 years ago with a small block chevy, then switched it to a big block Buick. I had trouble with my oil filter hitting the frame so I had to build a remote oil system for it. Since I didn't want to take a chance on hurting my good motor, I put in a mild 455 to make sure the oil system was ok. The motor I used was a '73 8.5 to 1 compression with small valves from an Electra. I gave it a quick hone and overhaul with a Poston 113 cam. I used a new b4b with an adapter for my 1050 carb. The torque convertor wasn't set up for this motor at all. I 've got 3:90 gears with 13x33 slicks. I figured this motor was making around 370 horse. With iron heads and me in it, it weighs 1650#. It ran very consistant 9.30 to 9.32@141mph. I should have my good motor in it next month. It should run around 8.40's@155mph. The fastest it went with a 623hp small block chevy was 8.20@162mph. I've had low 10 sec. cars before and my current '66 special runs 11.50's, but this dragster smacks you pretty hard. It's alot different ride. Scott
We wanna see some pictures if you got some.Sounds like a blast to ride in !!! All that torque and no weight to hold it back...Drooollll !!!:Brow:
It's going to be a month or so for pictures. I just got it out to get it recertified (NHRA) this past weekend. Now I need to get my good motor together and in. It seems like I've always got 4-5 projects going, it's hard to find time. Scott
The bbb dragster in bg ur referring to was my father Danny (Toad) Rowden. He ran two different rear engine dragsters over his racing career. He held the record for worlds fastest stage 2 buick for many years on a low budget and parts he had to create from scrap do to lack of high performance buick parts. His last year at bg he ran a 7.71 at i thnk around 172 mph. He also owned all tracks throughout missouri in various cars including his 69 buick powered camaro the "imposter". Worked side by side with his racing buddy and buick genious larry moore from mexico mo. After racing career he kept building hot rods for his son (me) that to this day scream like no other motors built for less then the trailers cost that haul my competitors cars in on. RIP Danny (Toad) Rowden
