I talked my brother into buying a '65 GS 4spd car last year and we're finally getting time to work on it. He got a title with the car, but once we started really looking at it we realized there is no serial number tag in the drivers door area. The trim tag is on the firewall, ST 65-44437 FB 94898 TR 158 CA 0 - 2LP - 3H - 4FS Where should we look on the engine and frame to verify that the serial numbers match the title? We have the body lifted off the frame, just need to know where to start wire brushing! And, if all that looks good can we get a serial number tag?
Tag decode Top line: 1965 Skylark V8 Sport coupe, built in Flint, MI Second line: Trim = Black vinyl buckets, exterior paint = Artic white with black top. bottom line is options installed at Fisher body: (2)Second Group: L= 4 speed P= Back-up lights (3)Third Group: H= Optional exterior trim belt reveal molding, which is the chrome molding on top of the door next to the window glass. (4)Fourth Group: F= Outside remote mirror S= Tilt steering wheel?? Serial number is on the engine, stamped on the block just in front of the valley cover, to drivers side. A two-letter code and production number is stamped on pass side. SN may be stamped on the trans. Is it a 4 speed?. There's a plate (bearing support) between main case and tailhousing. Number should be stamped on top surface. SN is on top side of frame. 1) near rear edge of drivers door , and 2) between rear wheel and bumper. It may be VERY hard to see. Procedure for getting a title for it will depend on the laws of your state... There's a great website and forum dedicated to the 65 GS, at (where else?) www.65gs.com :TU:
From talking with one or two members at 65gs.com, it seems the 4S code refers to the GS package itself, as they have found every 65 GS to have that code.:TU:
Tom, don't spread those incorrect rumors here! Some have been found without it. :Brow:Some people think the S is for for Wheel Opening Mouldings, but no one seems to know for sure. o No::laugh:
have never seen a VIN number on a st300 trans on 65 Gran Sports. Just the NK code and date. And I have seen alot...
VIN number is stamped on top of frame on passengers side behind the transmission support bracket but in front of the middle body mount.
Chris, I've also been told that it might refer to wheel opening moldings as well. A few years ago, I asked Yoda if he had deciphered the 4S code, but at the time he had not.o No: Therefore, back into the unknown continuum it will go. :moonu:

The short answer is no. Here is a good link even though it is for Oldsmobiles. See the Acc. Codes section http://www.442bro.com/
^^^^^ I was going to say that. Dan beat me to it! You can look for a build sheet or a broadcast sheet. Sometimes they stick them in the seat springs on the underside of the back seat.
Thanks for the links, I have only a corner of the build sheet. As for the belt trim I think it came as a package with the wheel lips.
