I have a 69 Special Deluxe and I'm rebuilding the engine this summer and I really want to show it off at the nationals and run it down the track to see what it'll do. The trick though is that it has a turbocharged chevy 250. I've heard that you can only run buick powered cars down there but will that be a problem since it's the original motor? The other thing is do I need a helmet? I don't think it'll do anything past a maybe a high 11 on a good day. Do I need to be a GSCA member or anything or can I just pull up and run during test and tune? The last thing is can I do anything with the show considering I'll probably get there on friday?
I can not answer your questions, however I hope you can run! You have done a great job on your car, keep it up!
I haven't been to the nats since 99 or 2000, but have been a gsca member since the mid 80's. As far as I can remember the cars need to be Buick powered. In fact, you could run a Buick powered anything. It's my understanding that vise versa is not allowed to run. A Chevy 250 is the original motor? I am thinking by "original" you mean it was there when you got the car. I think the rule is it had to be born with the car.
Ken, a chevy 250 was the base engine in many models/years. I'm still not sure they will let you run though.
It may be too late to give you the heads up now, but i know for a fact youd be welcome to run at the buick performance group meet in columbus the first weekend in august.
GS Nats rules --> http://gsnationals.com/RaceRules.pdf Rule #7 = Buick powered only, no corporate engines. :idea2:You might contact them and ask for a waiver, since your car came orginally equipped with that straight 6. Can't hurt to ask.
I'm pretty sure they'd let you run test and tune, if anything they'd prolly not let you race in the bracket eliminations
If that is the original engine for the car then yes you can run. You do not have to be a member, but I suggest you join since it will be cheaper that way. Plus you will get the benefits of being in the club among them being a top rate publication 6 times per year. So bring it on!!!!!
And, concerning the GS Nationals: Not to mention while there you will be able to meet a lot of the great knuckleheads that are on this very site. Which is the best part about the event anyway.
Nobody seemed to mind the chevy powered skylark the raced there last year (and i think won the class he was in if i remember correctly). Ill ask gbsean to confirm. Also there was a gathering of gta's there which yes, are buick powered, but pontiac bodied. So something tells me itd be fine.
i disagree you cant run a roadmaster with the 5.7 you cant run a newer car with the 3100 (you can run the 3800) if i am incorrect i am sorry jake
Wear a helmet for your own safety if you are going that fast. And by the "rules" it is required. If you want a firm answer on whether you can run with your original Chevy engine, call Richard at the GSCA offices, or go to their own website and ask.
I would hope either club would honor the fact that Buick manufactured that car with that motor, so what's the big deal. ou:
I don't see why they should not make you run, that car is original Buick motor and trains,at that time Buick even went as far as build a universal bell housing on the trains for that motor,so what's the problem?BrunoD.
To answer the question about the BPG...it's Buick powered OR Buick bodied for the regular classes. Q16 is the only class that requires a car to be BOTH Buick bodied and powered. Yes, I will also say....A chevy powered Buick won Bracket 1 last year!
