my 65 conv. has a good size gap between the base of the wheel and the steering column. you can actually see the directional cancelling cam. it is spring loaded because if i push in on it the gap closes up. is there an adjustment that anyone knows of? thanks, paul c.
Paul. Sounds like the steering wheel is not tightened down. You would not get the springing if it were. I have the same space deal with a column I am working on for someone. I believe the adjustment is at the lower bearing area but i don`t know. Have you found anything out? It`s been a few years. John
It is adjustable, but like Juhn mentioned it's not easy to do with the spring in there so remove the steering wheel first and remove the spring, then slid the steering wheel back on. Loosen the clamp on the shaft down by the lower bearing and loosen the clamp that holds it to the dash. You should be able to slide the sleeve up to where you want it, tighten everything back up, then put the spring back in.
I loosened the clamp on the lower end and it allows me to pull the shaft forward giving more gap. I want to push the shaft down for less but it seems to stop at a shoulder in the lower bearing area. There are 2 screws in the lower bearing area 180 degrees apart. Are they for adjusting? The shaft needs to go down. John
Under the hood by the master cylinder is a adjustment clamp on the steering shaft. Loosen that while having somebody push hard down on the wheel to set the gap where you want it and tighten the clamp.
i have since put a floorshift column in and adjusted the clamp by the lower bearing, has desirable gap now.
