Forgive the shoddy artwork . . . not much experience with photoshop. Just wanted to get some ideas on what everyone thinks about this possible paint scheme. Did it QUICKLY just to get an idea of what it could possibly look like. Anyone have any input? Good, bad, changes, different colors? The car is going to be a white base, with black stripes, but the pinstripe is up in the air as to color choice. The stripes on the side of the hood are going to run over to and up the front fenders. Any ideas? The hood has a custom hood scoop i had made; metal, not shoddy fiberglass. The gold swirlies and script is just to get an idea of what gold leaf or painted designs could look like (still up in the air). Lemme know what everyone thinks! Any other ideas for a genuine 70's style paint job? BTW. . . Please have the decency to keep my designs original. I really don't wanna see another car like mine out there.
Hi John, Cool custom paint design ideas - I like the fourth one with the red and black design, seems to go well with the black interior.
I would try solid panels. Panel paint jobs were all the rage in the early 70's. Try a rootbeer color. Earthtones were "in" in those years. Maybe some white lacing in the panels. Or a paisley design. You could try airbrushing the edges to better define them.
I have a nice file of examples of 70s style paint jobs. Jason is on the right track. Think panel paint, typically with earth tones, browns/golds/oranges/yellows and maybe some greens The examples I have include fish scales, lace, freak drops, fades inside the panels, etc. Pat Ganahl's custom painting book has some cool examples, but if you dig through any magazine from 69-74, you'll find all kinds from good to very bad! Around 75-76, the trend changed to "graphics". Mark
Have you seen the AD on TV that has a 70's ear van with a trailer doing a burnout and then making a hard right turn onto the street from the parting lot? I lived through the 70's once and other than the Muscle Car I can't find much I like. I do enjoy other people being artistic. I don't have it in me.
Jason, Yes, I'll have to scan them though. Some more design techniques from then: cobwebbing endless line acetylene smoke In the meantime, check out this thread for some more ideas: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257556 Some relevent - some not. Mark
I thought those were the three favorite pastimes of Cheech and Chong!!uzzled: You may have just found the obscure GSX "Mod Squad" car that was supposed to compete with the The Judge!! With a design like that you've got to have the Keystone style wheels or Cragars. Those '70's paint jobs are so cool. I like your initial drawings...nice creative work!! Make sure and look at those old drag car magazines for ideas. I would love to do an Oldsmobile in a similar manner someday...the big panels on top of the W-25 OAI hood beg for some of these techniques.
I took these last July at Car Craft. This car is lacquer, and was painted in 69 or 70 by Gene Restler. The paint has held up unbelievably well. A few checks here and there in the clear was all I could make out of any deterioration. Mark
Old thread i know, but did you ever get that car painted? Still planning on doing these funky stripes? My opinion, i hate it when people try to paint by following the sweeping fender lines. It takes your eye away from the body lines, and makes you only see the paint, and the paint just doesnt look like its following anything. Its a very Pontiac Judge thing, and I never liked those lines over the fender. Also, i dig the hood stripes. 2 freinds and I dreamed up something similar. (it was painted in 2006 so no ideas were stolen). http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n149/online170/Cruises/?action=view¤t=DSC05183.jpg
Didn't get painted yet. It just keeps getting pushed farther back on the timeline. Money's tight, and I can't quite justify spending a whole lot on something that needs so much more to get finished. I'll be sure to show it off when it finally gets painted; whenever that may be.
Olds is the 1st thing that came to my mind, too, when I saw it... The design just behind the side window, almost reminds me of the chrome naked woman silhouette that truckers have on mudflaps/etc. Otherwise, the White car looks just like my 1st Skylark (without the graphics). I REALLY like the chiseled hoodscoop design, and how the graphics are pointed to surround and accent it! VERY Cool!
You mean this one? I just call it the "Reefer" car; for obvious reasons. Wonder how much the painter smoked before he came up with that idea? You can see where I "borrowed" some ideas. My current designs have changed a bit. Would've been nice to actually see it before the paint was stripped off. Anyone have pics of the engine bay of this car?
