spohn or hr bar. 72 chevelle. what backspacing you guys running with what tire wanting to run a 2800ish stall and get traction with 550 hp 600 tq have edelbrock lowers stock uppers braces moroso racing springs. drum brakes on back.
I have a HR and Parts bar on the rear on mine and love it. Car stays flat in the back now. If you jack the left front off the ground with a floor jack, the left rear also comes up. You want a 5 1/2 inch back spacing at the most. I have 5 inch (10-inch-wheel), but you are limited on tires for the street unless you do some cutting of the fenders
what size drag radial could i fit back there without worrying about tire rub on fender lip. i already beat the fender lip out on the inside. car will be driven daily and if i have the money the track every weekend. all tracks over 2 hours away
We run a 12.5 x 28.5 MT sportsman pro's on the 72. We have the spohn parts on the race car. Most people run the HR bar. I don't think you can go wrong either way.
what rear end you run i think mine is an 8.5 but it dont have the two ears at 5 and 7 oclock. when i burn out both back tires spin. did 8.2 rears come factory posi? when i take the cover off i see 4 spider gears and the ring gears . im a little slow at rear ends
2800 stall? IMHO 3500 minimum, 4000 even better, 4500 best. If you do 2800 you won't be putting enough power to the rear at launch to need much of anything for a rear suspension. If you do put the power to the rear at launch you can get away with minimal effort ($). A lot of people swear by the HR bar. I'm going to try one this year but they are expensive. Up until now I've use stock Moog springs, cheap Monroe gas shocks, stock control arms, HD bushings, Edelbrock braces, $20 air bag on the passenger side and a 1" Adco factory style rear sway bar. This set up ran 10.60 with 9" slicks.
well it will be a daily driver. you think i would get pulled over every time i take off if i had a 3500
An open, non posi carrier will look like the one on the left. A factory type posi will look like the one on the right. If you have 10 bolts on the cover and 10 bolts on the ring gear, and don't have the knobs, then it probably is an 8.2. You can get a posi carrier for that, or you could get an 8.5". More parts are made for the 8.5" I have several 8.5" A body rears if you need one. Monzaz (Jim) here on the board has good products, prices and advice for the parts. We built the one in the red car with a rebuilt posi, 3:42 gears from Monzaz. Kept stock axles. In the race car, built with spool, 4:10, 30 spline axles that we got from Monzaz.
i 2nd the rearend parts from monzaz.. cant go qrong with a built 12in with ford ends through scandc.com either I hear hr bar is the best for drag i sold mine cheap to d7cook from above and traded up to a detroit speed rear bar with swivel links(best for pro-touring) spohn bar is also a great pro-touring type bar and best place to get it is here (has similar bind free method as DSE bar but it has 3 mounting holes for bar stiffness!) http://scandc.com/old/spohnarms.htm Since your car is DD you just have to make a comprimise you'll be more happy with.. is it going to be a DD that you take to the 1/4 mi or DD that'll go to auto-x/RR or will your car do a lil of everything?
This is a Chevelle, right? They came with Chevy 8.2 C clip rears. That would be the original rear in that car. They did not come with 8.5's BTW, aren't you getting a little ahead of yourself? Aren't you building an engine with aluminum heads? I would take one thing at a time. You will make yourself nuts this way.
I know all about getting ahead of myself, you never seem to get much done this way and have lots of parts laying around instead of being installed on the car!
im getting input for my next build. i already have a 462 on the stand built waiting for a timing cover then ill pull the stock 455 drop in the 462 trying to get a build plan before i buy anything i wanna build my car where it can handle the alum headed motor before i build it. how much for an 8.5 and what ratio mark.
lunati voodoo 68001 484in 505ex 223indur 233exdur at .5 262 268 adv i belive may be off a couple numbers just a mild . iron headed 9.5 cr build
Also something to check and make sure of is, The Chevelle will have a wider rearend than the Buicks. An inch in total I think? So, the off set on the wheels you want will be different?
that would be perfect the wheels and tires i have right now cut into my tires when i punch it on the outside
