Hi I have a 72 skylark custom conv. with a 400 automatic . What do I need to determine to be able to replace that trans with a new 4 speed .This is a daily driver so I do not want to put a pile of money into it. What are some good replacement trans for this application. My wish list is a M-22 Rockcrusher but that would probably require a rear end swap as well right? Any breakdown on what the right procedure for determining my needs would be great . I am a amateur knuckle buster but have done some engine work and have painted a few cars that have come out really nice so I am not a complete newb . Thanks :beers2:
There are many things needed to make it like factory. The cost is rougly 3K-3.5K. It was another Muncie originally. We have accumulated a listed of parts in past threads.
Here is an incomplete list of parts required: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=143119&highlight=speed+convert+parts
One notable thing about the job: Your crankshaft may not be drilled for a pilot bearing/bushing. There is a pilot bearing adapter at http://www.supercarsunlimited.com/info/adobe/catalog17.pdf but I don't know if it will work for my (or your) engine. Can anyone suggest how I can figure out if it will fit? I'm guessing I need to know the diameter of the end of the crankshaft. As for a complete list of parts necessary, I found this site today while researching my auto->manual swap. http://www.4speedconversions.com Why would an M-22 Rockcrusher require you to change your rear-end?
