I used Yukon gears. They are very quiet. I'm sure Richmond are excellent also. http://www.yukongear.com/
Yukon gears are nice, sometime more expensize then others but just look around.. Motive gear performance is also really nice u.s gear would be another good choice ps, yukon know makes lockers, their grizzly locker looks like a better design of the detroit softlocker, they also make a lunchbox locker and an air locker..but those are geared more towards offroad.. they just need to make a version of the trutrac now lol
I've got a 8.5 with a 3.23 Richmond ring and pinion in it and they are very noisy between 20 and 50. I'm going to swap them out for OE gears made by AAM soon.
Check the set-up...Who installed them? Double check back lash and pattern of mesh of gears. We have set-up many Richmond and do not have issue with noise...Could even be dirt in a bearing and chewed that up OR loose pinion preload on the bearing. Check the specs on the rear before swapping. HAs this done this noise from day one? Jim
Richmond gears After two failed attempt to run them with no howling I gave up on them after checking BL, pinion depth set up to there specs etc 3x, we installed a set of US gears and they were perfectly quiet throughout the range after the first install:TU:. I wil never buy a set of Richmond gears again.
Just did my rear using "Jegs" gears. Work fine. No noise at all! Not sure who made them but I am sure it wasn't "Jegs" and the quality and price was excellent!
Got a set of Motive Gears from DTS since they are close to me. I'll let you guys know how they work out when I get them installed. Thanks for all the input. Tim
Got the rear end back together and it is noisy. Set up as recommended from Motive Gear, 25 inch pound rotating torque for pinion with new bearings, set pinion depth with proper depth gauge, and backlash at .006. They say there gears are designed to operate at .007 to .009, I dont think .001 will make that much of a difference. Pattern checked all the way around the ring gear and it looked perfect, centered on both drive and coast sides. Warmed gear up on the stands and road tested. Heard some whine on the stands but went and drove it to see how it would be on the road. Was very noisy at first but got less noisy the more I drove it, but still whining on accel and decel at certain speeds. I dont understand why it's noisy. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Jim, took some pics this evening of the pattern, also backlash was still at .006. Removed carrier asm. and rechecked pinion depth still where I set it. I looked at the wear pattern after cleaning the oil off and it looks like the pinion is running off the heel a bit but that doesn't show with marking compound. Your input is greatly appreciated. Tim
Jim, The pinion shim thickness is .036 for the 3.73 Motive Gear set. The 3.31 it originally had a .030 pinion shim. I checked it with a T&D machine pinion depth checker. I'm trying to figure out how to downsize the pics or maybe it would be better to email them to you. Going to pull the pinion out this evening and measure the pinion head thickness and subtract that from the master housing dimension which is 4.670 just to see if the checking depth is in the ballpark. Yah that picture is very hazy... LOOKS to be too shallow. from the pattern...BUT if the backlash is on the tight side it could be fooled into think this. Need the coast side too. Try to check the gear backlash at .009 .010 It will help the pattern come out better and a little gear oil on the teeth before you turn the ring gear round and round will also help the pattern come out. When you say to shallow does that mean a thicker or thinner pinion shim? Took it apart again rechecked pinion depth and it was at .512, should be at .516. So I put a .038 shim under the pinion bearing and now it's at .516. Increased backlash to .0095 and pattern didn't change much. Put it back together, warmed it up on the stands and it was quite. Took it on the road and still noisy but better than it was with previous set-up. Maybe the third time will be the charm!ou:
Guys: A new set of R&P have to be broken in ,no ifs and or but..when you put in the gear set drive the car for about 20min to 30min at cruise speed do not get on it...park the car and let it sit for about an hour at least...if you dont ,at least you will get noise, at worst a strip ring and pinion.
Steve, That is too long for break in procedure. ALL manufactures are changing there procedures. SHORT 5-10 min run then cool for triple the time the drive. DOING these short intervals 2-3 times at least. More heat up and cool down cycles are better than one longer cycle. Yep when the gear pattern rides up on the peak of the tooth or rolls the marking compound off the top like it appears yours is then the pinion needs MORE shim What was the original shim? If you only increased by .002 you might need .001 or .002 more? BUT PAy attention to the pattern as this is how you will get quite gears. It will also tell you if you have any defective teeth in the set-up. ON a good set of gears the pattern will be consistant on EVRY TOOTH...THIS is very hard to come by these days...IN ANYONES sets...lol. Jim
