I met a guy who claims to have taken a factory cast iron 2x4 intake off of a '72 Riv motor. I haven't seen it or ever heard of this. Could there be any truth to his tale? If so where would it have come from? Experimental?
Not Buick factory, but Offenhauser makes a 400-430-455 Dual Quad intake manifold. Link :Comp: Since they were also made in a factory, your mate wasn't lying..... But these are aluminium, not cast iron Dual Quad Offenhauser in a model year 1973 Riviera:
It looks like it says Offerhauser on the intake manifold in the picture to me. Just to the right or the distributor in the picture. That would be on the front flange or the intake to block just aft of the timing cover.
A member here owns a prototype big block which is sporting a cast iron dual quadrajet intake, carbs and all. I have no idea how many may have been cast by Buick engineering. Check out the never-produced three rib valve covers and "log style" exhaust manifolds, too. Looks like this one was in a car at one point, note the detent/variable pitch switch and the pre-67 steering pump. Devon
It's alway interesting to me that so many of the Buick engineering prototype parts made it out the back door and still exist somethere. Just imagine what would have been with a 4-bolt, Stage II, 2X4, 455 CID, Post-Coupe car in 1970. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda...
I saw a 70 455 GS at the Flint Sloan show a few years ago that had a 2 quadrajet cast iron manifold. Never got to talk to the owner.
I realize this is an old post, but is this what you are referring to? As far as I know, 4 are known of, and this one is mine. I'm thinking of putting on a factory stage 2 455. Dual Quad 3 by John J Jerry Jr posted Aug 30, 2020 at 10:24 AM
That is a very cool piece of Buick history saved. I know a guy that worked in Buick salvage back in that era and he said when they got experimental parts they were to be busted up and destroyed before they left the plant. He also told me about some parts that were so cool that he hid them in the plant for years thinking of a way to get them out, but he said he never did.
Very cool.....I bet it would be quite streetable ....small primaries, good distribution, stock type choke....
