I have been wondering and thinking ( I know a bad thing) about really building the 350 in my wagon. I am wondering how much horsepower can be pulled out of a SBB. I am looking for a streetable motor but one that will kick ass and take names. Show what a Buick can do. Especially the punk kids who go to Wyotech here in town, and others too. Tim
I've heard a rumor that they put a Mini girdle on that engine and pulled 1400 HP out of it before the block and heads cracked.:beers2:
the heads just cracked, not the block (unless bill did more since his last post about the subject :do no: ).. porting to get those flow #'s got them really thin I think it was 1/4" plates for the center two mains.
Any link to the thread that shows the build. one stickied one isn't working. I want to learn more and start planning.   Tim
Yep it got deleted for some reason, I was told why but forgot already. They got an easy 500/500 out of it at first which didn't seem like allot of effort but porting and typical build stuff. Which is all I want, then stick twin turbo's on it for fun
Check my sticky called "best 350 threads" there are many 350s around 350 hp and over 400 ft/tq that are mostly stock just cam, headers, and some mild head porting. Head porting is the major performance opportunity hands down. Matching a 2500-5500 rpm performing cam, with headwork, 2500 stall tq converter and some mild gearing (3.42 max unless overdirve trans added) will net you a great running street car with over 300 hp forsure and up to 400 hp depending on variables. Keep compression arond 9.5:1 for pumpgas. Headers are a must in my opinion for race engines, but for street engines manifolds are fine as long as you use at least 2.5" mandrel bent tubing. If you are willing to add a 3000 stall tq converter and plan to drive at over 3000 rpm most of the time then you can step up to fully ported heads, large cam, and make 450+ HP. Focus on the low rpm torque, do not overcam for a street engine, and match desired rpm range with camshaft specs.
I would like to get about 3-500 out of it. Should be enough for me. Are the heads are a limiting factor for the SBB. Is there a good starting point, would the T/A stage 1 intake be a good start? Tim
i didnt hear that, about the more hp, i i do know they cracked at the intake side due to the extensize port work. so that just means for any f/i guys you dont need to do a radical port job on the intake side like whaty was done on that engine, and mainly just focus on the exhaust side
heads, and compressions with a fully built engine they most would get out of an 8.5cr motor woulld be shy over 400hp but if you're starting up with 8.5cr you could get a a thinner headgasket and shave the heads a bit yo gain an extra point to point and a half..other wise just rebuild it with 10.5 to 1 pistons
Here is a 350 hp build up. So I would say maybe $8K since 6.5K is what it takes to go to 350hp. Also how street friendly do you want it? It takes more to do that. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=153248 Jim Lore
Pretty street friendly. I'd like to drive it around. but with 6.5k in the engine alone, with the turbo kit, water methanol injection, msd crap, and a wideband i'd be looking at 8k+ either way. *sigh* buicks need the surplus of aftermarket parts that chevys have.. with the same price of them too. Thanks though Jim, found some good info on that post. Michael.
A nice strong stock build with a couple of turbos, will get you more that what you want, for less than you want to spend. At least that's my plan..
I had the idea of 400 hp on engine, then boosting it with 15 lbs of boost or something in that range. But after seeing those numbers I think I'll stray away from the 400 hp with the engine alone, lol. I am now considering toughening up my block and the insides, and not focusing as much on HP output. Heads ported/forged pistons/rods/crank polished yadda yadda yadda... you get what im saying, then slapping some turbo's on it and just running 12lbs of boost... or something like that. I have the $ but I dont want to spend nearly 10k that I would practically never see again. Damn racing, and going faster... why do you have to be so addicting?!
